Swapping the engine cover

Post by nwk00 » Tue Jun 10, 2014 6:33 am

Just purchased the engine cover off ebay. Quite sexy when new. The lettering and logo is a matching frosted finish like the aluminium trims in the interior and aluminium optics on the exterior.

Tolerance in manufacturing is not great. You can see when I try to line up the covers against the intake runners, both covers don't line up perfectly. Maybe Audi used different manufacturer for this.

However, the 4 mounting areas line up great against each other on both covers at the back. I have included pics of the engine with the cover off so it's easier to spot the 4 mounting clips.

Weight comparison. The carbon one is the lighter version.

Viola. No issue with installation even though both covers don't line up perfectly. The cover is quite easy to take off, just pull off gently with your fingers at each corner. I tried to do it last night when engine was hot and it wouldn't come off, but this morning it came off easily after cooling off overnight.

And off it goes into storage till I get other carbon parts for the engine bay. I want to see how they turn yellow with heat in comparison to one another.

Made a mistake, the covers are actually identical in size. The left and right intake runners are staggered so when I line the left side of one with the right side of the other, they obviously can't line up perfectly. My bad.
