Each sensor in the wheel is communication with it's nearest aerial. If you swap the wheels over it will not be able to communicate with the sensor it did previously and this will throw up an error after a few minutes. You can either reset the pressures (like you did) or just keep driving and it will soon realise that the wheels have been changed and then correctly communicate with the nearest sensor. At least that is what happens on the B7, I imagine the B8 is probably the same.
Is it that system or is it done via a wheel speed sensor rather than actual pressure ? I thought the latter

I have no knowledge of the B8 system, just assumed from what happened when he swapped the wheels. You can tell by the valves. Do they have the same meatllic large valves like your old B7 had?

I'd always assumed it used wheel based TPMS sensors. However, when I had the tyres changed on my B8 RS4, the fitter told me afterwards it was a wheel speed sensor system as no TPMS in the wheel. Fwiw, it never actually went off when I had a full flat puncture, but had showed a couple of reduced pressure times when it had a slow puncture

The best way I can describe the diff roll as Graeme put it is to say that it feels like the front diff is binding a little and the outside front wheel is being scuffed/pushed as the diff is unable to allow it to move at its natural speed.
