I recently noticed a faint hum-like sound coming from the RS3. Not engine hum...a very distinct, different noise...

Resonating in nature and increasing in pitch as the speed increased. Only speeds above 32 mph though, it was fine below that. Didn't matter if the 'box was in manual mode, drive or "S". Difficult to discern where the noise was coming from. Took it to Audi dealership where I bought the car, and went for a run in it with one of the the techs in the passenger seat.

Said he thought it may well be tyre/bearing issues. FFS, the car is 8 days older than 3 months and has done 4k miles!!! It's not been driven like a crazy person and most of the terrain has been motorways. I had not noticed any juddering in steering or indeed any increase in noise on turning left or right.

Had it in this morning for them to have a good look at it (oh and I didn't let them wash it today!). They couldn't feel much give in any wheel, but thought the front offside bearing felt slightly gritty. They changed this bearing under warranty, and although I have not given it a long run, at speed, the noise (for now) seems to have gone. Will be giving it a proper run tonight though.

I appreciate that these things happen. Bit cruddy though when you spend a friggin fortune however...Workshop manager did say they would report the issue to Audi, just in case others this is more than just a one-off.

Here's hoping that the noise stays away and this has solved the problem.

Thought it would be useful to share this just in case anyone was having similar issues.

Its an Audi, or rather a German car.

They are overtly complicated mechanically and do not match the japanese for reliability I am afraid.

If you buy one expecting it to be perfect you will probably be disappointed

little niggles are par for the course but shouldn't put you off

dont want to put anyone off getting one, its just such a barmy little buzz box, a few little niggles are a small price to pay, yin and yan

but the car gets so much flaming by net experts without driving it and by tarded jurnos who cant powaaahhhhhhh slide in it I dont want to add to the flames

i think my little niggles are just typical german car stuff not RS specific (i hope) nothing as serious as the bendy wheels (i hope again lol)

Dave - don't be coy - you are amongst friends here. Some of whom have been RS enthusiasts/owners etc just as long and in my case longer than you. It would be nice to hear of your experiences just in case I encounter any of the same issues with mine. If you would prefer to share by PM then please do.

Have driven up the A1 today....and FFS, I think the steering wheel alignment is skew...funny how that's happened after the dealership had it for a bearing change.

ive had my geometry redone, was massively out

turns in like a fooking nutter now

waiting for the tuners to come up with a geo setting and anti roll bar upgrade to kill the understeer (you got to be going like a fooking loon to notice it) so it will need redoing then

Well I have been able to track down that engine rattle I get in heavy traffic when its hot, this is cold start ...

I dipped the engine, i filled it 400 miles ago and its lost half a litre ...
