Exhaust Valve issues???

Post by biker78 » Mon Mar 19, 2012 1:23 pm

Afternoon All,

Just have a quick question. Whenever I use the S-button and slow down from 4th to 3rd the exhaust valve seems to close and re-open when I slow right down into 1st gear. For example when I slow down for a speed bump, I notice the "metal clanging" noise when the valve opens. Anyone else have this problem (or indeed if it is one)? I can't seem to find any info on how the valve works. I'd have assumed it's open constantly when S-button is pressed.

Cheers,
Chris

Well having phoned Audi, apparently they don't know how the valve works either! :audibash: All I wanted to know was whether the valve is supposed to stay open the entire time the sports button is pressed? I have to take it in so they can see it for themselves.... seems a bit extreme for just a "yes" or "no" answer!

Going back to 2003, and the TT MkI with the 3.2 quattro DSG - the 'worst valve would open full just like you say to make the car burble more as you slow to a stop. Makes pedestrians take notice. I believe it was done on purpose. I suspect it's the same here.

dont you think it works in a similar manner to the Rs4 one? When you idling and at a stop, the exhaust valve is open when the sport button is pushed but closes until certain revs then re-opens... so you dont get a drone at low rpm and high way speeds... SO it only opens when really pushing or at a stop when you can physically hear the change

That's how the RS4 one works too.

rpm < 1000, valve open - so pressing the S button at tickover opens the valve and makes it louder

3000 < rpm < 1000 AND 3 <= gear <= 1, valve closed
rpm > 3000 AND 3<= gear <= 1, valve open - so in lower gears the valve is only open at higher rpm

gear >3, valve open - so in higher gears the valve is always open

Cheers PetrolDave.....that's what I was looking for! I think that's the deal with this one. Cheers, :beerchug:
