Yes 17.5% VAT!
As from this year the first year of ownership (of an RS5 for example) is going to attract a showroom tax of £950 and will be £435 every year after. Tax rates are based on CO2 emissions. It's really cheap if you drive a tiny car or indeed free for some.
Annual inspection only takes place after the third year then annually but isn't so bad.
Insurance for me is £500 annually for my RS4
Fuel currently £1.15 per litre.

All in all, you need to not think about it too much!!

Here's how the Road tax works. http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/road-ta ... ges/231720
the insurance isn't too bad, about the same as mine...$1200 for 3 cars
fuel is high, ours is $3/gal Shell 93 (Your 99)

what the heck is a 'showroom tax', is that in addition to other taxes registration?

then again, I'd gladly pay more if we had national healthcare ;)

We have to pay road tax each year for a car to be on the road. I think it's like your registration. The 'showroom tax' as it's been named is the first year's road tax but more expensive! The idea is that it's meant to encourage you to buy a car with lower emissions. You guys get a new licence plate or a sticker for each year from memory. We get a small paper disc to stick on the inside of our windscreen.

An American who wants nationalised healthcare - oh? Controversial!!

not controversial, logical ;)

we keep the same license plate, but you are correct, most states issue a little sticker...plus we get an annual safety (and some places emission) inspection, if you pass you get a sticker for inside the windshield (if you don't pass, no insurance, no registration, no driving )...each of the 50 states is different, causes some confusion...no national system

Almost, Production Operations Oil Trash, same place, different office, same BS!

We call them rednecks too, amongst other things!! They do indeed like their guns and the fact that they're not really controlled. Why you would need an assault rifle (or indeed three) to go deer hunting is beyond me. Having said that, they maybe don't use them for deer hunting. Perhaps more for use when they've got the funny white hoods and capes on (and I really wouldn't be surprised!).

I don't think the RS5 will be faster than the R8(V8)
and definitely no where near the R8(V10)
7.59 claimed for a journalist driven car (HvS?), as opposed to one driven by Frank Stippler a DTM driver, quicker than the M3 at 8:04. The extra 30ps, sport diff and exhaust, ceramics are surely worth the 10 seconds.

The showroom tax is just another way to raise easy revenue for the government, at no cost to them, and to collect more tax from the

UK car owner.

It's got f%%k all to do with the environment, ommisions etc

If they were GENUINELY concerned about the environment, answer me this

Why no VAT on aviation fuel ???

If only we could get every motorist to fill up on 2 specific days per week and every motorist to stick to the legal speed limits 24/7 to

f%%k up their tax income and cause traffic jams on every major road in the UK as a protest against the never ending taxes on us motorists !!

As long as we keep accepting, and paying, without protest, these new taxes, they'll keep on inventing new ones, while they find new

ways to replace the income they have lost after the expenses fiddles, second home mortgage scams etc. etc. etc. have been made

public. The expression "Do as i say, Not as i do, f%%k you" should be the MP s motto. I feel a lot better now !!

the M3 is 300+ lbs lighter and was on sport tires...
no way will it be 10 sec faster...
the M3 was driven by Horst von Sauma, as was the other RS4 which had carbon brakes, no sunroof, sport suspension and sport tires...

all the 'sport auto' tests were by Horst...
and he is as fast as Stippler as verified by how close he is to Walter Röhrl in almost every test, give or take a few sec...sometimes faster...
he has 1000's of laps around the place...only Walter compares

if the RS5 cracks 8:00 it will be an accomplishment...

I'd imagine the ceramics alone would be almost worth 10secs over a non-ceramic equipped RS5 on that track, stronger, more confident braking and lighter weight.

75kg heavier than my RS4 though? That's a whole extra passenger! I'm happy to hazard a guess there'll be virtually nothing in it.

Glad you feel better now  for the record, I totally agree with you!

I do 6k a year whereas a sales rep in a 1.8 litre vectra could easily do 30k. Who has the most emissions now then? Total BS imho. You can pay so you will. Simplze.

I reckon 100 gear shifts around the Ring?

Even if each S-tronic shift is only 1/10 sec faster than a manual shift in the RS4, there is your 10 secs...

The GTR is ~1700kg and runs sub 7.30 with (ostensibly) ~480hp so the extra 60hp is worth ~30 secs on the RS4!

Weight + trick diff = performance

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/doc.asp?c=52&i=20819

I predict somewhere between 7:50-7:55.
