Too old for my TT
Too old for my TT
Ah, mid life crisis over - perhaps time for something a little more "sedate".
So thinking of an S6 (budget of up to about £12k). But is there much difference between an S6 and a A6 2.7T (apart from the obvious).
The A6 is a little cheaper to buy, more ecomical (and cheaper to fix I assume) and easily tuneable to about 300bhp so I understand.
I'd love to find a late 2000/ early 2001 model of either to save paying that b*****d Darling any more tax in future, but is there anything to be gained spec-wise from a slightly later model ?
Cheers

Sedate! err I just got this as the family run around
I only ever drove the S6 I ended up buying, so cannot say what the 2.7t is like. However the v8 engine is so smooth and quiet, it basically keeps going until you lift your foot from the loud pedal.
I managed to find an excellent 2000 model with 78k on the clock. Picked exactly for the reason of road tax, anything march 2001 onwards will soon be £4xx a year to keep on the road
, mine currently sits at £185 and hopefully increasing not much year on year.
The only mods on my car is exhaust that is a bit throatier so you can hear it, not so much of a purr anymore, uprated front discs (not sure about the pads), boot lip & led rear lights. I have also some rs6 19s to pickup from the guy I got the car from hopefull at the end of this month. I think the spec for all 2000 models is quite high.
The only problem I would say you have is finding a 2000 s6 with average milelage (80k) at a decent price (i paid £9500 for a black one), theres one on PH for 8k at a dealer (not audi) but never got that far to look at it. Also the odd one appears on autotrader but in the 2/3 months I was looking my list only had 4 on it and I bought 1, the other sold the day before, 1 still at the garage (see above), 1 may still be for sale (i have his number - silver 55k, champagne leather/alacantra, lpg conversion booked PM me and I will ask him).
One thing I can say for sure you will know your petrol station pretty well (or maybe thats just me).

Nogaro blue S6
Obviously without seeing it cannot vouch for it but http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0283990720 may be worth a look (car dealer just using ebay to flog its motors http://www.queenswaymotors.net/).
BTW nothing to do with me, just one of a very few <2001 models about.

RE: Nogaro blue S6
There good motors and nothing as far as i know to be gained from later models
Yep, noticed that one and would be interested - but it's a long way from Somerset to Glasgow to see my first S6.
The Ad doesn't say but I presume all S6s had Bi-Xenons. All the other cars I've seen on the web have full leather recaros - first time I've seen one with alcantara - is it possible that these aren't the full Recaro version ?
Thanks anyway, seems strange that most big Audis seem to be for sale north of Birmingham - very few down here in the SW !

Where in Somerset are you? I reside in Taunton - can take you for a spin in mine if you have never been in one (i bought mine without ever having been in one before
)
You are right finding one down this neck of the woods is a pain, there was one in weston can txt him if you want as still have his number.
Mine has the recaro with alcantara bit, i assume they are full recaro as has it embossed on all the seats.
Not sure about the steering wheel gear change on all models, not all ads say this - mine has them and have only switched it into this mode once as full auto does the job.
You prob have seen this one http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/417394.htm, was my 4th choice if nothing else was about.

I travelled all the way from aberdeen to sheffield do get mine. Dont let distance get in the way of a good deal !!

All seats are recaro just different trims and i believe they all have steering controls for the gears. Mine is a 2000 and does.
When gunning it over a country road your getting no where near the cars potential in full auto. If you wanna drive fast you have to be in trip mode. The steering wheel controls are good because you can keep both hands on the wheel but using the gear stick does feel more natural if you know what i mean !!

S6s were higher spec than the A6 2.7T, mine was tuned to 308 Bhp with Milltek and did about 5.9s 0-60 with the tippy box and averaged less than 20MPG on 15 mile runs. The S6s are slightly faster and have the wider body, bigger alloys, recaros, etc. My old A6 had £6k of options from factory, so don't rule them out! I imagine the 2.7T would be half the price of the S6, or at least a good few thousand pounds cheaper.
Hope this helps.
Hope this helps.
My black high spec S6 is for sale - 2001 (Mar - so potentially higher road tax if Darling doesn't cancel it as is proposed)

Caught in the "perfect storm" - a day too old for the tax break, price and mileage ! It's a lovely looking car but I think if I go for one of that age I might as well make sure I don't fund Darling's pension fund (apart from backbench grumblings I'm not aware of any proposal to retract the tax increases for older cars).tonyS6 wrote:My black high spec S6 is for sale - 2001 (Mar - so potentially higher road tax if Darling doesn't cancel it as is proposed)

But why selling - you've only had the car a handful of months ?
.......Yes I know, and I was planning on keeping the car forever too, but my personal and financial circumstances have changed since then - the bottom line is that I'm having to start a new job in October doing huge amounts of mileage, so fuel consumption now has to take precedance over performance.liffy99 wrote:Caught in the "perfect storm" - a day too old for the tax break, price and mileage ! It's more than backbench grumblings, I definitely remember that a deal was done with them in order to ensure the bill got through the first time without amendments - in exchange for retrospective cancellation of the increase for older carsin the autumn budget. If he reneges on that there will be a backbench revolt. Assuming I'm right then cars like mine that have been devalued because of the original announcement will regain their popularity and value.
Just to confirm part of what I originally heard, here is a quote from the Daily Telegraph, so a reliable source and not just a tabloid rumour:-tonyS6 wrote:.......Yes I know, and I was planning on keeping the car forever too, but my personal and financial circumstances have changed since then - the bottom line is that I'm having to start a new job in October doing huge amounts of mileage, so fuel consumption now has to take precedance over performance.liffy99 wrote:Caught in the "perfect storm" - a day too old for the tax break, price and mileage ! "Backbench Labour MPs were given assurances yesterday before a crucial Commons vote that the new controversial Vehicle Excise Duty levels would be phased in over a longer period.
It meant Gordon Brown did not suffer an embarrassing Commons defeat, but the victory came at a price.
The Daily Telegraph revealed on Saturday that Alistair Darling, the Chancellor, was planning the u-turn on the unpopular car tax measures that he introduced in his March Budget."
Still trying to find confirmation about the more significant climbdown over older vehicles, but that is definitely what was promised.
