Water pump / thermostat recall?
Water pump / thermostat recall?
I've seen various threads about water pump or thermostat issues, and I can't work out if there has been an official (or unofficial!) recall, to replace these with the "updated" parts?
Can anyone shed any light? Thanks.

Fairly certain it's official. Either take your car to a dealer, or phone Audi customer services and provide your car's details, and they'll tell you straight away if the car is due any recalls or subject to TSBs.
Mine had the thermostat replaced FOC by Audi but that was when it was still under warranty in 2010.

Re: Water pump / thermostat recall?
Oh FFS. Audi CS have absolutely no idea. They say the car has had 2 recalls, but don't know what they were, but can just tell me the dealer and dates. The dealer said one was an SVM software update, the other they have no records of what is was, even though they did it.
They have no idea about water pump or thermostat issues, but she then said I should get my water pump changed when I change my cambelt!!!!!!!!!!!! err, no cambelt... Oh, but you should still change your water pump every 5 years.
I have absolutely no idea how I can go about finding out if my car has had a recall, or indeed needs it. And I would prefer to find out now before something could go wrong. How on earth can I get any sense from anyone and find out?!

There was a TSB but not sure it was a recall. Mine had it done when it was venting steam out of the bonnet.....although this only affected early cars 2009-early 2010. After that they had the new parts.

Thanks. Do you know what the cut-off date was in early 2010? Mine was registered July 2010 (so obviously manufactured some time early 2010).

Re: Water pump / thermostat recall?
My old S4 was a September 2010 car which was affected with both water pump/thermostat along with squeaky brakes and several other tab's.
Re: Water pump / thermostat recall?
aahhh, thanks, so mine is in the range, but absolutely no-one at Audi or the dealers can give me the slightest idea whether it has been done. It really shouldn't be so difficult to find out such information!!!!blackphantom wrote:My old S4 was a September 2010 car which was affected with both water pump/thermostat along with squeaky brakes and several other tab's.
Do you know where I can find any definitive list of TSBs?

This looks handy: http://forums.audiworld.com/alldata.php ... neid=4433/
Looks like it was TSB 2024897/1.
Mine too was registered Sept 2010.

More here http://www.automd.com/recall-tsb/search ... NE+COOLING and http://forum.rs246.com/viewtopic.php?p=403177 on "recalls".
Just daft that no-one on Audi can tell me any of this - I shouldn't have to dig around on the net. Someone should be able to tell me "your car should have had this and that done" and tell me whether it actually had or not.
All I get is a "computer says no" answer, and reminding me to change my cambelt

They will know, believe me they know everything tsb, warranty wise a car has had thats been done by Audi or if your car is affected by recall or tsb,my guess it hasn't been done or they would tell you if its been done.I don't have any of my old paperwork from the S4 ,if you look through previous threads and find the official tsb numbers then ask Audi do they apply to your car and if so you would like them doing.I've got a good relationship with my dealer and they know i don't take any crap which helps.neil1003 wrote:aahhh, thanks, so mine is in the range, but absolutely no-one at Audi or the dealers can give me the slightest idea whether it has been done. Re: Water pump / thermostat recall?
I'm sure B8 S4 S tronic owner Graham won't mind me reposting his earlier findings and post on SRS concerning this subject. His pics are particularly helpful.
Graham wrote:The symptom so I have read was more often than not sudden and rapid water loss. Not ideal conditions for an engine, but the steam and instant Christmas tree dash enough to make people stop driving.
I think there was a workshop recall for the water pump and then later one for thermostats. I am not 100% but I think these applied as and when cars visited dealerships. The original water pumps were plastic and the later ones metal.
There was reporting of some associated pipes later failing from a few people that had pumps blow.
Also some reported cases of steering pumps being taken out from the dowsing of water when the pumps went.
I forgot when I wrote my buying tips yesterday, but the waterpump is easilly visible and you can see if it is metal or not.
The part the green arrow indicates in the close up picture is black plastic on the original plastic pump cars

Thanks guys, helpful stuff. Looks like 19H1 and 19H3 are relevant, so I will enquire about those at my local dealer (not tried them yet), and those pics are very useful, I will check out my engine bay when it's light tomorrow. Cheers

Just note the codes are country specific, that is a code in one country will not be the same in another country .
