Hi,

Just Picked up my new S4 Avant yesterday Phantom Black, Tech pack advanced, Super Sports seats and a few other options

Been putting a few miles on it over the weekend, and am enjoying it a lot. I did wonder how I would get on after previously being lucky enough to own an RS4 B7. So far its great.

Bought through Audi as a car they had in stock but hadn't been registered. So luckily didn't have to wait on a list for months

Did any one get any options they hadn't picked or paid for when buying new?

I'm trying to decide between the new RS4 and the S4- I'm worried that after owning a b7 rs4, I'd regret going for the S4 - I'd be keen to hear how you think the S4 compares- the ability to fit a tow bar ( 4 mountain bikes), reduced road tax, and presumably better fuel consumption and hence running costs are what attracts me to the S4.
Keep us posted on your take on things.

Hi Birdseed,

Like you was a bit concerned having had a previous RS4 saloon potentially if I had had an estate I may still have kept the car. However I needed the space of an estate for family reasons and bikes like yourself.

I think the sound of the RS4 I had wont be forgotten.

However so far I am very pleased with the S4. Good space comfortable it can pootle in economy/efficiency mode or it can go into dynamic sporty mode and the modes are definitely very different. Also when not full the car doesn't feel overly bigger than a saloon in handling.

I am sure a few on here might be able to say what the S4 sounds with maybe a better exhaust or tune but standard to standard RS4 against S4 I probably only miss the noise and the straight line pull, but since then the S4 technology seems much better.

Hopefully I wont have to worry about the suspension issues I had with the RS4

Running costs insurance for me is a little cheaper but not much. Tax will be cheaper. Petrol I think is better but it looks like the S still likes a drink if you put your foot down.

Once you've got it run in (if you are running it in) I don't think you'll find much difference in straight line pull between the 2.

Wondered about the running it in, the dealer said no need, what's the general consensus? 1000 miles steady?

I just tried not to go over 4000 rpm for the first 1000 miles which wasn't easy!

S engines are apparently run in on the bench, I was told to give it beans from the outset.

@ Birdseed. I have an S4 Avant I got roofbars thrown in to the deal as I mountain bike and always had the bars on my 2.0T Q Avant. The whistling was horrendous and it was taking 2mpg out of the car with no bikes on it too. I got a genuine tow bar and electrics fitted which updates the stability control and Sports Diff. With rack plugged in it disables efficiency mode and enables the diff to overcome towing associated instability. So with the bikes on the back it's still only getting 26mpg on a plus 20 mile run. I've just paid my 2nd years road tax which was nice £260. It does 270 miles to a tank of mixed driving.
I too would love to have a go of a B8 RS4 to see if it is something a remap could not compete with.
