Should I switch from my C5 RS6?

Hi guys

Those who frequent the 6 forums will know that in the last two days I've had my 6 nicked - of course it may come back, but I'm not holding my breath! The car was well worked - full MRC stage 2, and an uprated box from the US that allowed me to run with 880Nm torque happily. The car was fully sorted, awesome, and the deep soundtrack music to my ears! (Wipes tear from eyes!)

OK - so I can build another, but.....

Spacewise I could probably now manage with a 4 rather than 6, so have been thinking about switching down. Needs to be an Avant, I want an S Tronic box (I'm lazy!), and I want the performance to match my old 6. So should I get a S4 - and if so what should I get done to it?

Dave

I've had a go in a B8 S4, and it felt really flat and slow to me. Coming from 880NM, I imagine you will be disappointed with one, the one I drove was standard though. Good cars, no doubt, but lack the sparkle and V8 thunder of your C5. I'm not going to go on about the C6, for fear of sounding like a broken record, but I think I've made my thoughts on C6 ownership clear to everyone that has managed to stay awake, if not a C6 I would have to suggest a C7 S6/D4 S8, if not another C5, you clearly love 'um.

B8 with the right mods will be plenty quick

I guess if you've got the appetite to sort another '6 then just don't think about it. You'll probably miss the torque of the C5 but ask Doug to go out in the MRC B8S4, it couldn't hurt to ask, right?

The B8 is quite a nice cabin too.

The torque of my old C5 is/was addictive - the problem of simply rebuilding another C5 is that to get back to the same torque I'll need another box from 517 - and that was a lot of time and effort, as well as money!

A conversation with Doug, and maybe a trip in theirs, could well be on the cards - don't want to take up his time until I know the status of my old beast for definite.

Dave

PS - where are you S4 boys - I need a good mods list, and your enthusiasm for this route!!

You need to try a tuned one definitely or it will feel slow and flat compared to what you just had. Upside is its piss easy to get some nice numbers out of it, after that sky's the limit for mods. Ticks the boxes for under the radar, much nicer cabin, up-to-date chassis, and plenty of glowing reviews (which buck the trend for current audi's it seems)

Probably stuff you already know but get one and get it down to MRC. You won't be disappointed :)

Really sorry to hear about that - I've not read much of the C5 forum since my old car moved beyond it's regular boundries. B@stards.

However, coming from a tuned C5 RS6 to my B8 S4 (saloon), let me tell you what I think....

OK, so you won't get that 600torx or whatever it is shove in the kidleys, but it's fast enough. If you want proper fast, then see Doug for the full fat 500bhp and as the S4 is the neck end of 200kg lighter than the 6, it makes much better use of the power it has than you'd have expected.

However, the biggest difference isn't the lack of torque or 200+mph top speed - it's the handling. My 6 had Bilsteins, Pilot Super Sports, 540bhp and ceramics, but wouldn't see which way the S4 went down a challenging road if the driver wanted to naff off. Pick a car with the full ADS package, including tricky diff, and it just feels so good. The shell feels 15x as stiff as the big old Avant, so none of that rattly pedal-box that you get in the older car when one front wheel hits a bump. It's just taught, grippy and feels like it drives from the rear instead of the middle. And it will drift on track and does some proper lift-off sideways action on the roads when required. Fundamentally a much more fun car to drive in every respect.

I miss the sound of the Non-Res Milltek and 100 cell cats, but fit an APR RSC system and Nascar gets replaced by Dino or Alfa V6 tunes which are pretty addictive. The rear space is almost as big as the 6, although you'll lose ultimate stackage space in the boot I guess. I don't miss an average of 18mpg though - S4 averages about 26, making 31 on a decent 80mph run. Won't impress those who favour chip-fat fryers, but that's nearly 50% better and saves a lot of money and time in petrol stations.

I went for the 6MT instead of DSG and I think it's all the better for it - sharp throttle, east to heel & toe and just satisfying. And the technology packages make the 6 feel like something from the previous decade.

Just saying.

Thanks for the various replies guys - especially RINGA

Glad to say the police have now recovered my beloved C5, apparently without any damage, so won't be changing just for the present.

Cheers

That's very good news - and I guess it would have been left unharmed, assuming that they were trying to move it on anyway. Excellent result.

However, do try yourself a high spec B8 S4 and see what you think at some point - I think you'll like it.
