Hi there,

I've got a 2008 Avant with 22k miles. I was away last week and when I started the car yesterday I was greeted with a cloud of white smoke (it was smoke and not steam). Not noticed it before any ideas?

Yep...my RS4 was the same..more so if its been used for a quick start and move on the drive or been sat for a week or so.

My RS6 does same.

Apparently shows that your secondary air pump is doing its job warming up the catalysts and burning off the rich start up fuel mixture. Should only last for a couple of minutes till revs drop back from 1200 rpm to normal idle around 700rpm.

Theres a technical bulletin for right hand side oil return pipe.
Check it out if it needs doing.

Oil spillage vessel fitted to rectify smoke on startup from right hand side exhaust.

Will this be done to any car that needs it? Or does it have to be asked for?

I have no smoky start up but if I boot it, blue smoke comes out the back. My rs4 did this so I don't know if I need to be worried about this. The rs4 was a right smoker, at least 30 a day.
