Ceramic Upgrade....

Post by catfood12 » Sun Aug 26, 2012 10:46 pm

I, like others, have found the limits of the steels. I even had some custom bells made up for some Willwood floating discs which made little difference. I've flushed fluid through, ATE Dot4, RBF600. Again little difference.

Now looking at OEM carbon upgrade. Went to my local friendly Audi dealer, only joking they're w4nkers, went to Slough Audi parts (at the back of the industrial estate off Buckingham Road...

Discs are £2270 ea, calipers are £918.64. pads £275.70. Backplates £45, caliper hardware £97.54.

Interstingly, carbon RS6 discs are same as on 2012 Bentley GTC (Part numbers 3W0615301N, 3W0615302F for those with time on their hands, and a fascination with Google). Those prices are retail. A chum's wife works at local VW dealers, and got me some bits from TPS with mega discount. She's pricing this lot up in the morning. I'll report back. If anyone else has been through this, has some information or hints please share !

Be interesting to see how much with discount this 'little' upgrade comes in at, would love to do it at some stage.

Catfood, are you just thinking to change fronts, or all round? You will need an ECU recode to deal with going from steel to ceramic, and I don't know if this means you would also need to have ceramic rears as a result.

Let me know if you can get a further discount with a second order, I'm ready to upgrade now also.

Christ this is going to be about 15 grand. I'd be surprised if there was mega discount to be had on this kit.

Assume the rears are a bit cheaper, though.

Don't forget there's the coding to be done to the car too.

Think I'll stick with OEM steel.

C6 discs are bigger than the R8 ceramics. Also, I don't believe you need to change the servo for the c6 either, just recode.

Mine were factory fit

Hence why I had a queue round the block to px them for £5k!!

I genuinely was gutted to let C6NVS down, but the car went as it was for asking price :(

Bit of a noob question: what is it about ceramics that makes them so disproportionally expensive? The cost of materials/manufacture so significant?
