Front Discs - when to replace

Post by 23skip » Tue Mar 27, 2012 3:50 pm

Car is due in at dealer for service in a couple of weeks time (apx. 23000 miles done). I am aware it will need new front pads as the light has just started to come on occasionally and they are looking a bit thin. However can anyone advise how to judge if new front discs are required. Mine have a slight lip (apx 1mm) but other than that seem fine. Just want to be sure nothing is done by dealer if not necessary.

My C5 is in a similar position.
Front discs scored and light just coming on / pads 70% worn advised by garage at service.

I am going to try to have my discs skimmed by one of these machines shortly?

I have to say that I can not praise the company enough!!
I contacted them and they provided a list of a garages in my area that use the machine. They have replied instantly to all of my questions raised.
If the machines work half as well as the service provided by the company, then I should be pretty pleased.

If they do work ok and extend the affective life of the discs for some time, then it does seem like a no brainer.....

So dangerous skimming discs!

We do it reg in the Heavy Plant game but modern car discs don't have the meat that allows you to take advantage of
machining.

The RS6 C6 I believe have crossed drilled discs but some of the holes are blind and they are wear indicators as to when
to change the discs.

I can assure you that from my bike days when you are shifting and you grab a fistful of brake and hear that disc shatter!

It ain't funny!!!

+1
Not worth the risk when braking from the high speeds our cars are capable of.
C6 discs are cheaper than C5's.
