Why would you want such a big autobahn cruiser in a manual?

The semi auto box in the C6 is a gem, much better than the current range of flimsy DSG's.
Perfect for this size of car.

I have always preferred a manual box in a performance vehicle whether its a saloon or estate. I feel like I have more control.

I never wanted an automatic as I prefer to be fully immersed in the driving experience and in more control (I race cars, and have always considered myself a sort of "purist" in that sense). I was ready to get a C5 RS6 and install a manual conversion.

But then I tried a C6 RS6, and the auto box made everything clear. It's so relaxing to drive across the country to work meetings at a good pace, or be stuck in motorway traffic jams without getting a sore leg. And when you want to blast it a bit, the paddles work very well, so you always get out of the car feeling fresh and unruffled. Sure, it's not a car for chucking down B-roads, but then that's why you should have another car in the garage, complete with 3 pedals and gearstick. To be honest, if it had a gearstick it probably wouldn't be as good as it is.

Come to think of it, the same goes for if it were lighter. I've always hated heavy cars, but this 2 ton train is so stable at high speed and unperturbed by crosswinds that its huge weight and momentum makes it perfect for motorways. The work-of-art of an engine more than overcomes its mass, making its heaviness a non-issue.

So, overweight and automatic, two things that I naturally despise, are two of the reasons that this is a great car. Weird.

the TTRS and RS 5 S-Tronics are brilliant .... much better than a manual imo .... very responsive, give a great upshift fart and downshift blip

BUT

the B8 S4 S-Tronic is a pile of wank !

Those sort of boxes are fine when it comes to puny bhp.
However the C6 is in a different league

Different cars altogether the RS5 is a sports car like the TT RS, and excel in comparison on anything other than the motorway, as the RS6 is a long distance power house, although would be very close indeed in a straight line........ :)

Until I find an auto that is as good as a manual for control (driver decides what gear to be in not the car)

There is that but when you are on a full power run coming into a corner and want to change down the gearbox will decide if its ok to do so not the driver.

I have driven auto's before on a track in exactly the same scenario as a manual and the gearbox has not allowed a change down when it was safe to do so
in a manual.
