Wondering if this is just how it is or if there is an issue.

The auto close on my tailgate closes nicely until the last bit when it seems to slam shut. If I lightly put my hand under the handle and take a bit of the weight it latches much more gently. Struts are new and the same thing happens.

Mine's the same. Gentle close until the last 4 inches or so then it drops like a stone.

Does the auto tailgate pull itself closed over the last half inch?

Is does close yes but with a bang. If I add a bit of resistance by holding some of the weight then it latches nicely and pulls closed with a gentle click.

Any info on this?

I Looked into this for a while. I had an S6 before the RS and it was't anywhere near as angry in its close. I had the dealer look at it, I swapped the struts out tried all sorts of things but haven't found a solution. i have seen some YouTube videos suggesting there are different versions at the hinge point (think one OEM the other not) where there was a rubber surround that seemed to act as a cushion on the final part of the close, but I've not opened the internals up to see if a mod like the would help or (likely) create a new problem.

So are the struts the only thing that controls the speed? Or does the motor have any control on lowering?

Hmm. I considered buying new oem struts. It's one if these things that bothers me

mines the same, ive fitted new struts. most of the time it will slam shut at the bottom on the closing, but now and again it will close perfect
