It seems there are no threads about what the widest tires could be put on the rs6. I have the 20" version since it has the ceramics. Roads here are not the best so I was thinking if i should go with a bit wider tire hence a slightly bigger sidewall. Since the standard is 275/35/20 , i am guessing 285/30 won't be a problem but if i go on 295..i should probably go with a 30 sidewall. Does anyone have a good guess on that ? i previously had an m5 e60 and it had 19" tires and i don't know how this is possible but the bmw felt that it is more comfortable with its 285/35/19 tires.

Try using this: https://tiresize.com/tyre-size-calculator/ it provides you with a list of tyre sizes and the differences in their total circumference from your defined starting point. Pay careful attention to the recommended wheel widths.

In the end, if you want a wider tyre, then you will need to reduce the profile - tyre profile relates to tyre width - to prevent your speedo from being inaccurate. If you start with 275/35r20 you could fit, to a 10" wide wheel a 295/30r20 but the total circumference will be 2.2% smaller than standard... This is not a recommendation but an example...

If your roads are of poor quality going for a wider, lower profile tyre is unlikely to help with "comfort". Lower profile tyres will also provide you with less protection again damage to wheels on poorly surfaced roads.

If I were you, I'd stick with the standard sizes and drive more slowly on poorly surfaced sections of road

I used 30 profile tyres on a couple of cars for a few years, and I was forever getting the inside rims straightened. It was inconvenient, frustrating and expensive. With 30 profile tyres you can't go anywhere near curbs or potholes.

Open question - does anyone use 285/35/20 tyres?

That's what I meant... 285/35 would be the choice i guess. It wouldn't be much better but i guess it could give a bit more grip.
