hi lads
car has just stopped , all lights up from park to sport and wont move !!! transmission, clutch, gearbox any ideas

Engine still running?

Have you tried turning the engine off / on to see if that helps?

yes car fires up no problem but when I shift into gear it does nothing can just rev it ??

Odd, these boxes are not plagued with faults like the C5. Can you get it plugged into VCDS?

May not be gearbox... could be another element of the transmission. But agree worth getting any codes read via VCDS.

Before this happened were there any strange noises? When you try to select a gear are there any odd noises? If there are do these change with engine revs?

no simply all lights on dashboard PRNDS, select reverse camera comes on but just revs will not move , also tried paddles and nothing ?? very strange , never made a bang or anything

With everything working correctly but no drive the worst case is that the input shaft may have sheared. Trups had it on Classba's old car and the shaft shearing was silent so no idea it'd gone, it looked like a perfect slice through the shaft.

I had a Rover SD1 which decided to lose all the torque converter bolts. No symptoms, and no sound at all until a slight 'clunk' when the last one wound out. Found them all sitting in the bottom of the bellhousing.

The first thing to check with any malfunctioning automatic transmission is the fluid level. It's not a trivial task and lots of people get it wrong (meaning your garage may already have got it wrong). But it's critical to get it right. All sorts of things go wrong otherwise.

A kindred spirit - I owned several of them (though all of them manuals!).

Things have moved on since then, but they did make a nice noise.

thanks lads its being looked at as we speak !! I will keep you informed , ian it has made a really high pitched whirring noise previously to it stopping , that input shaft might be the answer ??

Well mine looks like it's just done the same as Trups and sheared the input shaft and mine has no unusual noises at all so, while I suppose it's possible it could be the shaft if its twisted before shearing, a whirring noise means something is still being turned within the GB and the input shaft alone (if sheared without twisting) wouldn't make that noise.

That's actually gutting to hear Ian, hopefully it's a quick enough turn around for the problem.

Is there many of the uprated boxes failing on big power or just yourself and trups?

Well two so far that we know of. Trups was an understandable driving situation (may have got a little "air" on a country road) and I drive mine very hard with all TCS/ESP off and kick-down full throttle gear changes from 2nd gear onwards which puts a lot of stress on a GB as there's too much grip to spin the wheels so that torque has to go somewhere, usually transferred to the road via a massive kick in the arse thump.

My guess would be that, if I drove differently, my box would still be perfectly fine - i.e. no kick-down, keep ESP/TSC switched On to chop power and reduce torque if I forget about the kickdown etc. The car would still be 95% as quick but that 40mph drop into 2nd full throttle change which hits so hard it actually flung my mates glasses off his head would would be missed!
