Clunking noise

Hey Folks,
The car has developed a clunking noise from the front left at low speeds, making turns, reversing etc. Jacked the front up
to have a look, the noise disappears. Put the car back down and the noise returns, initial thoughts were a tie rod but there
doesn't appear to be any play in the wheel.
Anyone experience this before??

Had clunking noise when front shocks were bad.

happens all the time: i'd suggest to thoroughly check front suspension... top arms get fair amount of abuse due to car's weight.
happens at cornering: check tie rods and more importantly CV joints.

Thanks for the replies folks, its a strange one. The car makes the noise turning left predominately, but also when
going straight over broken roads. One mechanic has suggested a steering rack, but searching the forums there
doesn't seem to be many mentions of these having an issue.

Just to update the thread, went with the suggestions of replacing the CV Joints. Garage couldn't unbolt the CV Joints from the
drive'S though, so I had to order a new set of drives. Surprisingly they arrived from Audi within 48hrs.
Garaged fitted the new drives yesterday, reversed it out and "clunk". The plan now is to replace to the wheel bearings next, the
saga continues..

I feel your pain, just done the same on outer joints and wheel bearings courtesy of shed loads of clicking. Gone with Shaftec outer CV joints (£132 for a pair) and wheel bearings from Allwoods which are probably just some random 3rd party at £155 for a pair.

Before you start replacing parts (..which can be an expensive task!) have you tried to figure out the source of the noise? Mine started doing the same, it's my DRC that's failed. O/S rear flexi tube that supplies the shock with fluid has failed, leaked out the fluid over time and as a result I get a nasty clonk on the N/S front driving on a straight road.
Has yours got DRC?

So after taking the car to another UK specialist, they have confirmed its the steering rack, aided by the fact that its now groaning
when you turn the wheel.
Anyone know of rack for sale??
Audi UK are saying its on back order and it could be months.

Try with a part # in google... not an easy task but i’m sure that there are dismantlers in EU / Europe that willhave one for sale.
One other tip is to try TPS and ask for discount (i know it won’t be cheap but worth considering as an option).
Hope that helps and good luck with it!

I've just done the same with the turbo oil return reservoir. Near £600 and on back order, got one coming from Germany for a touch over £100.
RHD rack should be 4F2 422 053 J. If you look in the parts lists you'll also see 4F2 422 053 JX - that 'X' means that it's available as a rebuilt item with core exchange, something that not a lot of dealers will let on about because firstly it's a cheaper option to you AND you get the core credit and secondly they usually want to fit the brand new unit AND pocket a credit when they send the old one back.
Not that I have a cynical attitude or anything....

Had a full shocker fail a couple of years ago, MRC replaced, re-pressurised and it detonated the rear line across their workshop so we opted to do all 4 lines. To be fair it might be time to get all of the shocks replaced as a matter of course. It gets hooned about on a daily basis and dont like being without it for long

Thanks for the replies, GSF think they might have one, just waiting on a call back.
Jim Haseltine - is there a parts list somewhere?
c3nturi0n - Rack is ordered through them by REP, they have told Ricky its on back order for possibly months. I rang Audi UK/Ireland and they confirmed
that there is no stock available.
