The puffs of blue smoke issue

Post by Ciscokid_London » Mon Jan 23, 2017 6:52 pm

I really appreciate the guidance of members that have experienced this problem before as there appears to be a few different avenues to investigate.
The car has done 68,000 miles (110,000kms) and only got the power upgrades at 97,000kms

Mods include: Full decat, Performance Airfilters, REVO STAGE 2 (boost 1.2 - 1.4 depending of fuel quality) I have a SPS controller with x 4 settings for the ECU, I run the car on REVO standard most of the time.

Audi South Africa told be it was the Oil Collector Part No. 07L 145 232 A

Oil collector.jpg (14.48 KiB) Viewed 2489 times
As the car only puffs blue smoke under initial throttle and then blows clean, and uses about 500ml of oil every 4,000km (2,500miles)

The possible causes from what I've read are:

Oil separator / Crankcase Pressure Valve leak
Turbo Blowby and or weak recirculating valves (I have got 249 errors but not consistently)
Turbo boost solenoid (I have lost boost pressure when the car is very hot)
Stuck injector (but I guess it would smoke on one side)

I'd rather not talk about bore wash, stuck rings and other major engine problems :drink:

If there is a process of illumination that I should follow it would be great to know, as Audi will just keep changing parts until the problems goes away. :audibash:

Huge thanks, Craig

Hi I can't say I am an expert on this, and the C6 does appear to be quite a reliable lump, however, every Turbo car that I have owned if the smoke is of a blue hue (burning oil) it has nearly always turned out to be the Turbo seals / issues.

Have you since your posting investigated further ?

Have you tired running a thicker grade of oil ? , and I would tend to agree it's usually turbos passing oil or valve stem oil seals ! I'm about To swap to a 5-40 racing oil that offers higher protection and will offer lower levels of friction than a standard 5-30 due to its triple ester compesision

You have a great point, and perhaps an acceptable oil loss rate. I think my circulating values are either broken or lost spring pressure (I would be interested in knowing what others have gone for, FORGE seems to be the general, or perhaps a new set of OEM) which probably lets through more than it should (does stop the problem of turbo blowby).

I need to take a good look at either of parts for sign of damage or wear, I'll probably start look at the airfilter for oil (They were perfectly clean and so was the induction pipes last time I checked).

Really appreciate the insights

Its a great thought, as I did that exact change on the last service. I moved to Castrol 5w - 40 (mainly because of the different temperature range in South Africa)
I have heard of folks moving the RS6 to the BMW V10 oil 10w - 60 - thoughts?

Before doing anything else, I'd have the intercooler hoses off and drain any oil from them. I've never seen a turbo car without some in there. You get oil mist from the breather recirculation and the turbos to name a couple sources. Cooling intake air in the intercooler causes some of it to condense in the cooler outlet pipes from where the initial spike in pressure on acceleration picks some up.

its not that simple as they are moulded into the air box ... cant remember his name on here but he has put gfb universals in and they are very good as they don't use a spring.

after a long discussion with my oil supplier we went for 5w-40 millers nano drive as its the best available on the market. it will provide more protection than 5w-30 of mid range oil but with the thickness of a 5w-40 but have lower friction properties as its the only triple ester based oil on the market i believe. the r8 v10 runs 10w 60 or 10w50 I'm not sure thats due to the heat the generate as this was part of the discussion with my oil supplier and he suggested they drop an oil grade and run the millers as it would flow better through the engine. as its racing oil it can withstand oil temps upto 150c. 100c oil temps to about 120c range 5w40 should be fine but you want a good quality oil.
