Carbon Ceramics - Maintenance and Experiences

Since the middle of last year I got myself back into an Avant RS6, missed my old one quite badly, just had to go back. Got a pretty decent spec one, pretty much has everything but the sunroof, even has the carbon ceramics, which are a bit mental, but always a crowd pleaser.

Anyway, I am curious to hear from anyone else has them, and how they find them for the day to day and what they have experienced living with them.

I own an online detailing store in NZ, which allows access to all sorts of car care stuff. But I have never used any brake cleaner on them as from what I have read they say not too. From what I have read, they are more porous and soak in the chemicals, and mainly cos there is no iron build up like normal brakes. If anything its just road grim. I found that just some Chemical Guys Mr Pink in its own wheel cleaning bucket does the job nicely. I also find that once they are washed they are silent for the next few days, but then build up noise, which is a unique carbon rotor noise, not brake squeal. But after each wash it goes away for a few days. Curious to hear from others who might have them and what they have experienced with them.

A fine looking RS6, and I do like the roof box!

I've got ceramics and have noticed on occasion a bit of squeal after a wash but only for one or two soft taps on the pedal but it usually disappears.

I also actually use Chemical Guys pink wheel cleaner and never really thought about it causing harm to the discs?
I do however use a fair amount of water when washing them down to make sure there is no residue.

Had the front pads off the other day, to get them inspected. Not sure if the sound is due to what we found, will know once we get new pads on it. But we did find some heat cracks, and some uneven wearing, which is odd due to the size of them and the 8 pot calipers. Will update you with more once the new pads are on, see if the sound is still there or not.

Could just be old pads, they do break down over time... and its a big old bus to slow down.

I'd replace them, make sure all 8 pistons move freely in the calliper and give the calliper a good clean too.

Yup, that's the plan, as I do not know how long these pads have been on the car before I bought it.
I'm getting some quotes for the pads as they are not readily available here in NZ, and rather not pay the 2 or 3 time mark up from the dealer.

Good man, there's a chance it could be on just its second set of pads, so the cracking is just age related...

a company i use for pads, they ship worldwide..

take a look at these, worth an email to check they do fit but http://www.jdl-brakes.com/pagid-rsc1-e4 ... ipers.html
Let me know if thats any help :)
