Gearbox and diff oil change

Post by wrekka » Mon Oct 27, 2014 4:24 pm

Just had my gearbox and diff oil done at Chester Transmissions. They are a zf specialist. They have done a great job and the gearbox feels a little smoother (although they said the oil in there was very clean anyway-always good to hear!)

Def worth giving them a try as they have very competitive rates.

Here is a shot of my solenoids!!

Ok. A bit early to do it, no? Had any problem, sounds, indications etc?

Mine's at 62k now and I'm thinking of doing it.

Wow.... Totally shocked they could do it in 2 hrs including the rear diff oil change. They skimped

Ask them if they had followed the full instructions as per Elsawin?.

I was very specific with them and explained exactly what i wanted doing. They said that they are very experienced in this gearbox (gave me the code name of it). I triple checked with them exactly what was going on and all seemed good. They even allowed me under the car to have a look.

Ok great but just to wait for the gear oil to come upto temperature between fills takes about 2 hours alone. It's a 2 man job having to start the car and run for certain amount of seconds then check oil and top up. This is done for a few selected gears as per the instructions. My gearbox oil change took a good 4+ hours and the rear diff oil took 30 mins. Hope this helps.

Ok cheers. They did take the car out quite a few times. When i say 2 hours that is what they charged me for. I was there from 8am to 1130am

No need to take the car out between top ups. It is done in situ once the temperatures has been reached for each gear and I'm not doubting your guy's work.

ZF themselves took around 5 hours to complete the job, and they know these gearboxes best. I would be surprised it could be done in much shorter a time properly!

Correct in regards to 5 hrs to complete the oil change. Mine took just over 5 hours excluding the rear diff.

Having mine done at Audi as pay next to nothing for parts/labour and know they will look after my car, I've ordered the oil, filter and sump gasket. Do I need anything else? They'll follow Elsawin instructions so should hopefully be all okay, anything else I need to do? Nothing wrong with the box btw, just doing it as preventive, especially now it's running over 1,000nm through it.
