the dreaded oil leak

Post by bob bobster » Wed Sep 17, 2014 11:44 am

Morning all,

I wonder if I could pick some brains out there ...

yesterday I had a service and mot with audi - car is 6 yrs old with 28k miles - plugs, oil, oil filter pollen filter brake fluid etc but they have spotted a leak 'coming from the oil pump drive - engine removal required' and told it is probably the pump but a technician would come and explain but when I asked if it was the penny oil seal that has failed on so many others there was suddenly a change of tact and that they would get me some more information and a quote but not to worry its not a major leak - but hang on if its the oil pump that is pretty serious ah yes might be the seal ??
so I'm now waiting for 'further information'

I have read on here about the oil leak and just wondered if anyone had any experience or could point me in the right direction of the appropriate thread/s

I do have a warranty with WMS Group but not contacted them until audi decide what they think it is in writing. has anyone dealt with WMS group (Warranty Management services) ?

any help appreciated

cheers

bob

Well, either way it is engine out. And the major cost will be in the labour. So whether it is the seal or something else cost is going to be high. I suspect, due to access, it will not be possible to 100% diagnose until the car has been dismantled.

No idea who WMS are! Everyone who has had the issue has been covered by Mondial.

Quite interested to see the engine out in all its glory rather just pictures and yes they have already quoted 30 hours but will reduce the rate but no rate yet ...

and tried searching as I knew I'd read about it but thanks for the link

cheers

Might be worth having a quick look at this thread also (what to do whilst engine out):

viewtopic.php?f=47&t=108990&p=666111&hi ... ut#p666111

I would have to add Hybrid Turbos to the list of things to do though !! (edit: Downpipes too !!) Rude not to, and then at least you have something to show for all the cost of the engine out.

Might depend on the warranty company agreeing to who does the warranty work, but at least you can try to work a 'favourable' solution from the start if that's the route you choose.

Get other stuff done while block is out?...I got a few other gaskets done at same time for coppers as
Block was out....rocker covers etc?

Just discovered I've got this problem :( seems common.

Was at 4Rings yesterday getting gearbox and diff oils changed. Dean there reckons it can be done without taking engine out, but will still be labour intensive :((

Only small leak at the moment, 1300 miles to oil service so will monitor.

Got insurance warranty when I bought the car, but it doesn't cover oil leaks :(

Good thing(if you can call it a good thing) is when engine is out you get new coolant and air com regassed too.
Plus if anything else looks a miss hopefully it will get picked
Up when block is out and can be rectified.

And as I've said any other gaskets etc.

Audi told me there's no other way but engine out?...read into that what you will.

I think it is a good thing if it can be done economically, engine in. Less for current and existing owners to be worried about.

I also agree with you Chris, if it starts stacking up that the cost is not that much less than an engine out, might as well drop it and have a proper look around and do any other items/upgrades.

Audi will only ever go by the manual, and the manual says engine out only. BUT, if DP's can be done economically engine in, the oil seal can't be too far away from a similar job.

What's everyone's mileage at the stage of discovery? Just wondering if we can draw any kind of conclusion...

My car is on 83k at the moment and still not suffered this problem, but I kinda feel its a matter of time.

Ok so i got my quote from audi of £4,770.00 to remove the engine but with audi contribution brings it to £2,914.66 but this does not include any further investigation or parts or labour once the engine is out as they are still unsure what it maybe

The car is at teesside audi and just wondered if any else ( i think rs6chris took his there ?) have taken their car there to sort the same problem and what their costs were. I have asked if they have had any other cars with similar problem and they have confirmed that no other cars have

As it seems to be a common fault has anyone challenged audi about it or is that just a head butting a wall syndrome ?

Got onto the warranty people who quote 'five star gold' but not that gold or five star to deal with oil leaks or gasket seal or 'O'rings' and all diagnosis has to be completed first by the owner ... so thats pay for all the works upfront and then come back to us and the argue haggle to get anything ????? - so back to the dealer (not an audi but independent ) who seemed genuinely annoyed and is now on to them as all his cars have this warranty - will see what that brings

Can anyone recommend an independent garage in the north yorkshire region or would you stick with audi ?

cheers

Bob ... who is today a little more depressed but still glad he bought it ( i think ?!? )

It's funny how the same dealer says no but Chris got his done there, are they thick? Can they not remember having to take an engine out? It's not like there are thousands with the issue surely it's not hard to remember.
