Unleaded v Super unleaded

Post by wowthatsfast » Thu Dec 20, 2012 12:50 pm

I passed by Swindon Audi yesterday and got chatting to the service manager about slightly excessive levels of white smoke especially at idle revs - I hope im not burning oil - it does'nt appear so as once things get warmed up on the open road its all good. Anybody got similar issues?

Anyway, the service manager did say to me that Super Unleaded is the only fuel that is acceptable in a C6 - yet when I look at the inside of the fuel filler door i find that 95 octane is also acceptable. Whilst i have NO intention of being skimpish for a couple of quid, one thing did alarm me.. He said that if there was a warrantly claim relating to engine parts that involved the wet stuff, it would potentially be void if the car is found to have anything other than 98 RON in the tank.

This sounds a bit mad...

Yeah, rubbish. The C6 makes quoted power on 95/98+ RON. It's the C5 that needs 98+, as per the owners manual and they won't dyno at 450/480 without super. If your C6 is tuned, super only. Simple. Audi couldn't refuse a warranty claim when it says the car can use 95 RON.

As per nudenuts advice below ,after i had white smoked out my garage on start up a few times, apparently a result of rich mixture being fed into the cats on initial ignition to warm the cats up quickly to operating temperature.

"On cold start the C6 runs hard for about 30secs to get heat into the Cats, lots of smoke/steam on a cold morning and noticeably increased noise. There are reports of batteries being replaced, I only ever had non start issue once, charged Batt and all was good, didn't ..."

Afaik eu rules state all new production cars need to run on the universally standard fuel.
That's why it is '98 recommended' not '98 minimum'
