An advantage is definitely that they are bloody sexy!

Doesn't make your stopping distances shorter though ;-)

My 900+ spec

Post by Shinobi675 » Tue Aug 02, 2016 11:45 pm

Which wasn't the original comment....

Is there any evidence that ceramics reduce your stopping distance over steals because of their "power"? Any? At all? Just a small bit!

Or are the advantages elsewhere... Like heat disruption and therefore a reduction in fade as you mention there.

But the fundamental question is... Do ceramics reduce your braking distance when steals aren't fading?

It's not their main USP, but yes. If the end user can utilise the better modulation at maximum braking efficiency and the improved contact patch adhesion through less un-sprung weight that the ceramics offer. Rather than just planting your foot into the carpet and let the ABS sort it out for you for a trashy, biased, mag review. Which obviously you seem to take as gospel?

Have you ever run ceramics for decent mileage to bring real world experience to this debate?

It's either ceramics or an anchor,
I prefer the idea of ceramics.
I didn't know there was such defence for steel brakes.
As someone did mention, if test stopping distances are similar,
I understand that the ceramics will not suffer fade and a dissapearing act from anything above 120, so much so that it's a dabbing game with the brakes until you've slowed sufficiently to risk full braking,
I know my stock discs are ouside of the Audi tolerances as they was tested a few weeks ago,
Prior to the wobble setting in the fade and eventual hum didnt take long to generate.
So if ceramics don't suffer such and will maintain sharp braking during good use then I woild like them.

My AP brake set up and calliper spacers was supplied by north east brakes.
Ferrodo pads would not fit the callipers.
lots and lots, no time served. It’s gets funnier, from yesteryears cars to ones due in months :piss:

Thanks for the Info, I just saw their FB post about them and they look like a good company to use!

Just a FYI, the Brembo calipers will only take a 405mm disc, any bigger and the pad can't use the full sweep of the disc and with a 410mm disc it leaves a 5mm unswept area (2x 2.5mm) which can effect the discs performance as it wears unevenly across the disc face. The C6 and C7 Brembo calipers are identical and their 405mm max size is why I've had to swap to AP calipers to fit the 410mm disc.

Thread Clean-Up - As this thread has got a little side-tracked I've asked PhilT to move the Brake discussion to the proper "Ceramics vs OEM Steels" thread here - viewtopic.php?f=47&t=120128 - so please continue any further brake discussions in that thread thanks.

Indeed the pads did miss up to 5mm of the disc, clearly 405mm discs should have been the max, I think the stock discs are 380 or 385mm.
Although the c6 and c7 brake calliper part nos match (apparently) then Ferrodo pads wouldn't fit the c7 callipers, unless they were cut down to fit.
Apparently I warped the AP discs in less than 2k, according to BG developments the first time they had seen it with no evidence of over heating.
The discs were grinded true and I declined to have them re-fitted.

Quite farcical that the company you quote as knowing their onions, is supplying parts to a platform you've already asked about? Once you steel guys have finally got your story straight, come back to the table to debate.

Until then...may the 'warped' be with you :dung:

Sam - Please could you quote my post where I say "BG Developments said steels are better" (or similar) as you posted in the pretty insulting photoshop above. Don't worry I'll wait and if you can't then I'd like an apology but if you can then I'll happily apologise.

V8 omfg - The OEM C6/C7 discs were both 390mm. Do you happen to remember what ferodo pads you tried? I know that Pt No FRP3133H fit both C6 and C7 calipers and thats what I'm currently running.
