Interesting...

Post by Mr V10 » Sun Feb 01, 2015 5:49 pm

Was reading a review in Car & Driver with the head of ZF.

This stood out.
C/D: At least it was easy for automakers upgrading to the new eight-speed auto.

BJ: Our eight-speed is the exact same size as our six-speed. We did that purposely so our customers could switch mid-cycle. Other than a technical application engineering of the electronics, mechanically we had very little we had to change, so driveshafts could stay the same, mounting points could stay relatively the same.
The Q7 went from the ZF6 speed to the ZF8 when it was facelifted CIRCA 2010, which explains why it was so easily possible on a facelift, Audi didn't have to wait for the next generation Q7 to introduce the ZF8.

Obviously, the ZF guy is referring to car manufacturers as his 'customers', but was curios if this means it would also fit into one of our ZF6 cars. Not that I ever would, but I do realise some of you are braver/madder than me, although Classba's out as he's already had his ZF6 upgraded, anyone want to attempt this and report back!? :P

The JLR 6 speed auto's were all the same as the C6 and now are all ZF8's on facelift XF, XJ, Mk1 RRS, 405 LR etc

A ZF8 would make a C6 very quick, it would spend its whole time riding a wave of mid-range torque.
In theory it makes an interesting upgrade path. Blow a wad on stage 2+ (zoorst, hybrids, WMI etc etc) OR swap out to a ZF8 and just get a stage 1+/2.
I'm starting wondering if a C6 ZF8 750/900 could take a C6 with 890/1100...

I personally don't think it's doable. Just think of all the unavaliable coding and programming of the GB and the ECU.... the fitment might not be 100% to the ZF6. Besides, even if it fits, I very much doubt it can handle 900/1200nm because ATEOTD, its a stock box to handle say 570/ 7xx.

Just my pennies worth...
Too much power is barely enough.

The ZF8 runs 700Nm in stock applications....that's surely below its maximum capability

Didn't a C7 smashed your backdoors in while it was pissing about changing gear... and 'trying to press on.
