Has anyone removed the subframe and so had to support the engine? I'm thinking if it's sufficient and safe to use only the rear lift points.
If someone has used the VW/Audi engine support I'd be very interested to know where to place the front left (driver's side on a LHD car) leg.
Thanks.

The rear lift points on the engine? No. You might be able to get away with just using the front points but I wouldn't risk it.
To get the subframe out from between the lower mount brackets and the body the engine has to be lowered by about an inch - probably more, certainly further than the shorter bolts for the brackets will allow.
