Avant rear boot inner lights

Post by WooshNI » Thu Feb 28, 2019 4:33 pm

Hi everyone the inner lights on my boot door are dull and discoloured comapired to the other part of the light that is part of the rear pannels.

Has anyone managed to re-polish these or do i have to buy new ones?

Thanks.

I polished mine and restored the shine. But when lit up you can see the crazing in the lenses. I'm going to try sanding and polishing. But if not I'll buy new. Can get a pair of aftermarket replacements for about £140.

Can the same be done with fronts... as in restoring them to original shine? 😎

I compounded and polished mine. They lasted about a month before starting to fog up again. Compounded and polished again then wrapped them with a light smoke film - they stayed looking good for months. Except at night when the crazing was very obvious. Most of it is on the inner side of the clear plastic covering the coloured parts of the lenses so there's no way to get rid of it. Other than that they still looked good when I changed to facelift lights around a year later.
With front lights you have to be very careful as the lenses have a thin anti-UV layer. If you polish through it (and it's easy, believe me) you end up with parts of the lens yellowing and fogging very quickly.

cheers Jim - mine are looking very good but ideally i'd want them back to (or as close as) to original shine if that's doable.

I should get the 3M kit early next week and will give it a go.

I've just read my reply in the clear light of day (so to speak), I was talking about polishing the rear lights on my RS, I've not touched the fronts. Where they're concerned I wouldn't use any sort of mechanical polishing as I've seen the result of polishing through the UV coating on other vehicles - it pretty much wrecks the lights.

I bought new Depo units, the fit and finish is terrible. I only bought them as the reviews I found said
they were equal to the OE. Valeo are the OE brand by the way.

I bought Valeo ones from buycarparts, about 140 quid but perfect. Just don't have the Audi Sticker on them, other than that they're the same.
