C6 rs6

Post by Stevie1982 » Thu Jan 24, 2019 9:54 pm

Good morning all, it's been a while since I sold my B7 RS4 Avant and I'm back on the hunt for the next toy and theres something that's drawing me to a C6 Rs6. I did start to look a the C5 but the repair costs for the gearbox amung many other things has put me right off. Now I know no 10 year old performance car will be cheap/cost effective to run. I've owned m3's, c63, RS4 and various lesser performance cars such as m135, golf r, Sti's etc but am I mad for considering a C6 Rs6, just I've not had a v10 and have always fancied one, have considered the m5 but the vanos and smg box puts me off.

So for those who know much more about them or have owned one I'd appreciate your feedback.

I'm aware that they have a coolant pipe issue and oil o ring issue but if these have already been dealt with what else do you need to be concerned about? Also I know pads and disks aren't cheap so try to get one that's recently had them done.

Would you be out off with one that's comfortably in the 100k or hanker after one with 80k on the clocks.

I've also read that mapping them makes a huge difference as to the feel of the car, I know 580bhp is not to be sniffed at but being so heavy having the extra power from mapping transforms the car.

Thanks in advance

100k is nothing on these. In Germany there are many with over 200k still going strong.

I've had mine for 3 & half years, bought at 110k miles, now got 145k on the clock and use it as my daily driver. Apart from consumables like brakes/tyres etc. its not been too bad. Just do it!

Only other thing I can think of is suspension bushes but I suspect that tends to hit cars that have been lowered. Mine needed front anti-roll bar drop links at 80K - cost me about £50 in parts and took about an hour to fit - most of which was taken up with getting the front end high enough for me to get to the things with weight still on the suspension and dropping it down again. I fitted the links themselves in about 10 minutes.
The inner rear lights on early avants suffer UV damage which makes them look foggy, the only real fix is to replace them which gives you an excuse to fit a complete facelift set.

Thanks for the advice so far.

Can I ask, I've read some bits about the oil O ring replacement is in the region of £1500, the oil thermostat £500 and the coolant pipes £700 to fix if they fail. Are they accurate pricing or not?

And I completely understand that fuel consumption will be something that is a part of the fun and I'm not asking mog but how many miles are you seeing from a tank of fuel?

Should I be holding out for a 09 facelift or does it not really matter

Facelift doesn't matter much - externally the only difference that might be noticed is the rear lights and you can upgrade a pre-facelift to them for maybe £400 when ECP have a decent discount going. Fuel consumption - my commute is around 25-30 miles of varied road (town/dual/motorway) each way depending on route and I get around 260-280 from a tank. Much, much less if I have fun while I'm about it or I do something stupid like drive around town on a saturday.
£700 for a coolant pipe job sounds like the cost of a cut'n'join (actually, it sounds a bit low even for that) - a full replacement will be much more. And you don't fix on fail - do it long before that, I wouldn't like to think what would happen to the engine if they let go when the car is in use.
I made a list of the kit I wanted on my car, broken down as 'must have' and 'maybe', with the maybes being a bonus. As it was, the car I eventually bought had all the must haves and one maybe.

Hi Jim, thanks for the reply. I do 30 miles round trip again a mix of roads like yourself so 260 odd wouldn't be to bad, curious so have to ask what's the cost to fill up the tank?
Would you still have that list? I'd be very grateful if you could post it up or pm it to me as although I've had a b7 RS4 the rs6 is very new to me so trying to do as much research as possible before buying.

Thanks again

I put a touch over £80 of Tesco Momentum @ 120.9 yesterday morning about a mile after the 'please refuel' warning kicked in. I'll see if I can find that list.

FWIW...I’ve been told that ‘generally’ cars either need both fixes or neither. Mine is checked yearly and touch wood, always seems fine. I suspect, but could be wrong, that it would be a simple pre-buy check for someone skilled to do.

my advice - don't hesitate a second :).

It took me couple weeks to get use to it (and trust me it's a PROPER wolf in sheep's clothes) but after then... it's great fun, super comfy (for a 700+ bhp super car), extremely versatile and great all weather car. Simply, you cannot go wrong with!

As others indicated, apart from few niggles listed above, it's an Audi so overall reliability should be high.

One recommendation i'd give is to opt for a car that's been maintained... i looked at few 1/2 owner vehicles with full Audi s/h and none had seal + cooler pipes done. I then opted for an enthusiast owned (with 3+ keepers) that's been super reliable so far. Other than rear disks and pads and full service (incl the gearbox) it's all i've done to it.

Fuel wise i was getting 320-40 on Autobahn last summer... max 200 with stop/go London driving.

It's all about (s)miles per gallon :)!

Thanks guys I've seen a 08 plate avant with 77k on the clock and 2 owners. It's got full service history, last two were a specialist and on the last all disks and pads were done. Asked about the oil O ring and coolant pipes and they've said they've been done. They are after 19k for it

I'd ideally rather an entusiat owned car but I'm yet to see one that works for me.

That's a very good price and peace of mind.

Got a link for the car?
