Brake ducts

Post by RossDagley » Sun Apr 26, 2015 7:41 pm

So I was looking at the phaeton brake duct mod for the rs4 back when I had the b7.

After cooking this brand new set of brakes at the ring a few weeks back I bought I'd look at the idea again - I couldn't see anyone who'd done it on the c6 so figured I'd just buy the bits and see what happens. :)

Turns out, not that big a deal. The back plates are a little smaller than the disc but there's no contact and the exposed bit of the disc is maybe 3-5mm at most so I'm really not bothered. The duct works as hoped and doesn't foul anything so a worthy improvement imo.

Good work Ross. Was it a straight bolt on affair?

Yeah. Unlike the rs4 which requires modding, these bolt on exactly as is, no modification required :) easy peasy.

Sure. Prices are from my TPS account so may not be the same for everyone.

3D0 615 447 G
3D0 615 448 G

3D0 615 311 C
3D0 615 312 C

Edited to remove prices as parts price now MUCH higher from TPS :( It's now £115+vat to source these unfortunately.

Would these be modifiable to fit ceramics?

Would you need them? Ceramics don't fade in the heat.

Might want to speak to Ivan about that :D

There'd be nothing stopping these working with ceramics now I don't think (depending on the offset of the disc - if it's too far back it may touch the backplate) but you'd have more area of exposed disc with the ceramic disc because they're that much bigger - I'd not be comfortable with that on the value of ceramics but with some fiddling I'm sure you'd be able to get these to work ok - perhaps trimming / welding the existing backing plate. Nothing is impossible :)

Ivan is the chap I met at the 'ring a few weeks back with a c7 rs6 - was joking about how he'd cooked his ceramics and had to go home because of it. Apparently it's the second set of ceramics he's ruined in the space of a year so they're not as indestructible as we think!

Thanks - I didn't really do a proper write-up as it's honestly not a big job - if you're capable of taking a set of discs off, you can do this. They're a straight fit. I was expecting to need to modify them like you need to on the B7 but was pleasantly surprised :)

As said, think the C7 ceramics are a different story to the C6.

But cooling for the C6 steels should certainly help some.

Have you had a look at the under tray? Do some of the naca ducts direct air to the brakes? Maybe the next step (if the naca ducts do direct air to brakes) might be to link your pheaton backplate ducts up to the naca ducts?

Just an 'off the cuff' idea (possibly a stupid one !).

The undertray duct now points directly at the new duct - when the wheels are straight ahead, there's a few inch gap but the (new) duct sits irectly in the line of fire from the duct through the undertray. It's honestly like it was designed for it. I think the new duct must get great flow there.

You can kinda see it just about here in the photo actually:

Image

The circled area on the right is the exit of the duct from the undertray, and when the wheel is pointing straight, the new duct sits directly behind it.
