C6 RS6 Full Size Spare Wheel - Complete

Post by R33 » Fri Mar 28, 2014 2:47 pm

So as I've said previously I hate not having a spare and feeling like the RAC are my only real option if I get a flat/blowout.

I finally found a complete spare wheel on eBay and received it yesterday.

So the process was:

I removed the foam thing filling the wheel well
Put the compressor and foam plus another compressor in the compartments in the boot sides.
Then I removed the valve core to fully flatten the spare wheel.
Re inserted the valve core.
Used a bit of wiggling to get the wheel into the well.
Used the plastic screw thing that comes as standard to screw the wheel down.
Put the carpeted boot floor back and put all the left over bits in the loft.
Have a drink and congratulate myself on a job well done ;)

I would say it's a very tight fit and the wheel protrudes a little above the plastic boot floor so I couldn't use the plastic wheel well cover so the only question I have left is as this cover isn't in place now and just the carpeted boot floor am I now exposing the interior of the car to anything nasty from the battery? The plastic cover wasn't exactly air tight so I can't see any issues?

Other than that it's all good and happy to have a spare on board in the land of pot holes!

Great post.

I will try this mod as some of the places I drive to, there isn't a RAC for a hundred miles.
Placing the spare in the wheel well in my sedan as shown will remove wifey's gripes about "no space in the boot with that bloody great wheel in there for my stuff" and 'that' look I get. :bash:

Reminds me that "I married my wife for her looks. Just not the ones I am getting now" :)

An obvious question, but I assume that in the unlikely event I need to use the spare, I have to re-inflate the spare with the compressor once taken out, otherwise if inflated in-situ, I would not be able to remove it from the wheel well ?

cheers,
john

Hi John, yes you need to remove the wheel before you inflate it. I've also bought a better compressor that I keep in one of the boot side compartments. Let me know how it goes, I'm sure it will be as straight forward as it was for me. :)

Fortunately I already have a spare wheel and tyre all prepped and ready to go (well it is wrapped up in cling film and stored in the shed!) so just need to clear out the well, fully deflate and insert......will have some KY on hand just in case it is a tight fit! :assflash:

Have you managed the job yet? Curious to see how easy you found it (or not)?

Not got round to it yet as I blasted the beast upto Newcastle for the weekend (dropped into Revolution who I can really recommend and got the tyres filled with Nitrogen for less than a tenner!). It is on the list for the coming long weekend so will post when done. Sorry

What brand compressor are you using? I think I'm going to do this.

Gents, did you try to use smaller wheel 255/40 9Jx19 ?
I am wondering if it would fit with the plastic cover on it...

Something like this:
