Can I borrow/use some wheels???

Post by Fatneck73 » Sat Mar 02, 2013 11:48 pm

All

I've a slight vibration through the steering wheel about 70ish. I thought it was my old tyres but 4 new pzero's added, balancing and tracking all done....and it's better, but still there so now I'm thinking I may have an 'oval' wheel (as apparently, the balancing may not pick this up!).

So...what I'm thinking now is that if I can borrow a set of wheels, just to drive up the road and back, that would tell me if it's them/it causing the problem?

If anyone is Southend/Basildon (Essex) and can help out.......or got any advice, it'd be much appreciated.

I'm also presuming that as these are 20'', there won't be many others, other than RS wheels, that'd fit?.?.?.?

Cheers,

who fitted and balanced the tyres?

I had a vibration like you. Got my wheels and tyres rebalanced and it was better but still there. Got audi to look at it when the car was there for some other work and they rebalanced the wheels again and it was gone..

I think it makes a difference how / when the balancing machine has been calibrated.

I would try re balancing them again first and you can see when it spins on the machine if you have an oval wheel

I'm on the sunny Isle of Sheppey and have a spare set of 5 spoke 18"s in the garden. Bit of a trek but your more than welcome to come down next saturday to run up the road with them to try out the theory. :thumb:

Don't think 18'' wheels will clear the brakes?

Ahh ok. Sorry I thought it was a C5 not C6. The offer still stands if they will fit.

It Sounds a bit extreme to change a set of wheels. I had this problem and I spent thousands on my C5 RS6 and it turned it was the brake discs causing the vibration at about 80mph.
Are your discs warped or have a build up of brake dust film making them uneven. On my old C5 I changed to drilled discs and never had the problem again. RS6's eat Discs for breakfast diner and tea. just a suggestion :blackrs4:

Could well be the disks but if I can borrow a set of wheels, I can eliminate that first (very cheaply).

Arggghhhhh, I have exactly the same issue. Just had wheels refurbed. Wheels now back on and steering wheel vibration exists. Also random pulling to left... and right?! Really intermittent. Sometimes driving feels like yr in a washing machine on high spin. Took wheels back, all re-checked for balancing, all ok. One of the rears changed for the front to equal out the stick on weights. Issue less worse, but still noticeable.

Help really really appreciated.

Check the Tyres, maybe not the same but worth a try. I have a 04 TDI polo as a daily as I cover 2k a month so my RS6 is not the best for doing work trips, anyway as ive just hit 100k in it I thought id spend some money as all the little things that have built up and knocking sounds when im driving I put off fixing. so sent into my dads garage for the following:
front and rear shocks
front and rear springs
front and rear bearings
new anti roll bar bushes ( roll bar had moved to the left banging on the chassis which was the cause of the knocking)
front and rear pads and disc
ball joints
new top mounts for the front suspension
toe arms for the front.

So all that done I drove the car without it been tracked, not bad, just abit wobbly. a few days later when I had days off work I dropped it to the local tyre garage who would carry out the tracking and they said that all 4 tyres needed changing and I was like are you serious, I was shocked as id just spent £800 and there was still and issue, the reason for new tyres even tho all have 5 mm of tread is there are flat spots all over all 4 tyres, not sure what has caused this but you can feel it, so 5 new tyres ordered from camskill which will be here today so hopefully when they are fitted on weds I will have a car that drives like new :)

So guys run your hands flat along the tyre and feel, you will be able to feel for the flat spots if you have any and if so you may have found your problem, when driving you can also feel it now its been bought to light, I went in my cousins BMW coupe the other day with low pro's and the drive was awesome, quite inside. then I got back in the polo and it hits you.

hope this helps.

Sand the faces of your wheels flat.
9 times out of 10 your refurbed wheel faces are not perfectly flat.
This imbalance will eventually cause your brake discs to warp.
And introduce wheel wobble.
Very common on Audis with floating bell discs.

Hi, is there a better way to be more precise on sanding the wheel faces? Take down to a local garage who can do this?? Unbelievable. The motor was perfect before the wheels were done - pissed off.

Mine turned out to be a spacer. Spacers off = a free fix (thankfully). Best of luck with yours.
