First RS6 test drive-

Post by K7ngy » Sat Jan 26, 2013 12:01 pm

Following on from my previous post about which model c6 to go for (S or RS ) I had my first test drive in an RS6 avant yesterday. The car is an 09 plate avant with 23k on the clock. It was seriously loaded with every option I wanted including DAB, rear camera and heated rear seats etc. however when it took it on a test drive (20-25 miles ) I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would have been. Obviously it was quick but not as rapid as I'd expected. Have I been expecting to much or could it have had issues? The car was one owner and from a main dealer so would think it was all ok. Would a remap be the way to go if I go ahead with the purchase?

What do you normally drive?

Not quick?... It's plenty quick even standard check speedo when your booting it and you'll see how quick it is.

However mapped they are mental.

I find driving it in manual with paddles makes even quicker progress as leaving it in drive.

And don't forget it's over two tonne that's a lot of mass to shift???

As all owners with mapped C6 RS6 will attest, the difference is night and day between standard and mapped.
Boot it in drive at 35mph/60km/hr, it kicks down to 2nd and goes into what I call 'warp drive' as "wtf" passenger comments attest!

I took a GTR35 owner recently for a 'test run' so he could feel what a 700 bhp 2 tonne car went like from 35 mph compared to his wimpy 550bhp video game car. He was dutifully impressed.

I know how great a car the GTR35 is, as have driven one, but the mapped C6 RS6 does it for me.

I also drove yesterday a Lamborghini Gallardo, a very nice car, looks fast standing still, but a bit too much 'look at me' for my liking. Again the mapped C6 RS6 does it for me.

However a Lambo in the garage alongside the RS6 would be a dream garage to a lot. I could not resist putting up photo of two V10 5 litre lambo engine cars in the garage. One a naturally aspirated, the other a twin turbo 'improved'version. These salesmen will try every trick in the book

On the 'muted' RS6 exhaust note, check out this lamborghini Gallardo as it takes off. http://www.motorward.com/2012/09/ugr-la ... rter-mile/

It sounds like the gates of hell have opened on the start line.

Oh that our RS6's could sound like this in anger!!

Apologies for rambling and welcome to RS6 C6ness!

First RS6 test drive-

It's quick enough for me in standard guise.

I may look at map, but I've had a prolonged battle with VAG over warranty work (3 months with car at dealer). I have an engineering background and my wife is a barrister. Between us we couldn't be more prepared. However I do not want to repeat that, it is stressful and I'm not in a hurry to do it again.

So for me, it is about comfort of warranty against a bit of extra oomph. If I want the latter I'll get something with less weight!

That's my dilemma at the minute. Warranty or remap.

That's all very well until you end up in a stand off. That can happen even at a dealership where you've been a customer for a while and have/had a good relationship. The service manager can move on, same with the DP. Things change.

I think you put the wrong picture up; the cars in that picture both have Audi V10 engines. :biggrin2:

Perth - You mention Lamborghini engine. What's Lamborghini about it? I know a guy had his engine out of a C6 and there was a Lambo badge stamped on it. But what physically is Lambo on it?

Hi Amar, :bigwave:

I would have to defer to the more learned posters on what are specifically lamborghini parts in the RS6 V10 other than the block casting and its raging bull stamp ( I believe the block is cast in Hungary(?)). see other site http://audisrs.com/about32749.html&sid= ... 1fca991a24

I have read where the V10 TT RS6 engine is described as "This engine is related to the naturally-aspirated V10 found in the Audi R8, S6 and S8, and the Lamborghini Gallardo, but the RS 6's engine has around 400 unique parts. [11][19]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_RS_6

But don't ask me what the 400 parts are! Maybe enough to meet the MikeFish post that the Gallardo and C6 RS6 are each running an Audi V10 engine with a Lamborghini casting mark on the block for Audi public relations/sales purposes.

The V10 Audi R8 has the same 'derived lambo engine' claim question: "the V10 R8 uses a 5.2 litre FSI engine,[4] based on the unit in the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 (which in turn was based on the 5.2 FSI V10 as used in the Audi C6 S6 and Audi D3 S8)" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audi_R8_(road_car)

The casting mark on the block is good enough for me to say that the C6 RS6 has a "lambo derived engine". If it didn't have that casting mark, it would be purely an Audi V10 with a couple of hairdryers attached.

All I know is that both engines deliver great power and noise when used in anger. Lambo does require ear plugs at times. It is not real stealth subtle.

cheers,
john
