Winter tyres

Post by anth8910 » Sun Oct 28, 2012 6:16 pm

Considering winter tyres (at least for the front), but not sure if its worth it. What's the RS6 like in the snow? I know braking/traction will be greatly improved with with winters on but what is traction like on standard tyres with them being as wide as they are?

Traction was good for me last year on normal tyres when it snowed. Went up and down hills with ease

on a 4 wheel drive car I would get all 4 tyres switched out. its amazing on winter tyres, no problem. Have not been through a UK winter yet, but can comment from an Europe/Alpine perspective

don't even think about only getting two winter tyres. stand a real chance of causing massive oversteer with no chance of recovery.
You'd probably be better off with 4 summer tyres than mixing them!

I can recommend Dunlop Wintersport 3D 275/35/20 in W series (max 270 km/h or 167 mi/h). Great stuff for the German Autobahn on your way to the Alpes :biggrin3: . Good grip in the snow and good in the wet. Unbelievable for tyres this size. Snow chains won't fit but you don't need them.

I used Icebears on 18" rs4 alloys last year and can recommend them and would use them this year but sadly they dont do 19" :bash: As has been said use 4 not 2 esp if they are being used on a high performace car.

Thanks for the advice. Think ill take my chances on summers rather than just getting two.
