R8 V10 - manual box

Post by fiberoptic » Thu Jan 12, 2012 7:18 pm

more and more good cars now are only available as automatic or paddle shift, which imho SUCKS!!!
thinking what car to get next had to cross out a few, just because they don't have manual gearbox. R8 V10 ticks all the boxes and it is available with a manual gated gear box. I'm very interested in your opinions about the gated manual on the R8 V10. Does it work well with the powerfull V10 or is it a handfull ? Will the gated manual in the V10 be hard work compared to the sweet box in RS4?

You have to go and drive both, the V10 gated MT is excellent tbh

ok not a V10, but in my V8 at first I found the open gate a bit clutsy and weird compared to the sweet B7

but after a few drives, you get used to it, and its FOOKI?NG spot on

Moved from that RS4 manual all are agreed is so sweet to the V10 manual. They are definitely different, and just take a little getting used to.

The power delivery is greater (obviously) in the V10 but it's still easy enough to get the clutch control right and avoid any jerkiness. The only thing i would watch for is a reduced amount of room between the clutch pedal and the left footrest, which can prevent full depression of the clutch pedal if your foot isn't in the right place.

That said, once you're in the groove, the gated box is an absolute joy, with its click-clack soundtrack through the gears and immense levels of control. Like the RS4, the V10 goes in just about gear so there's no need to continually hunt for the right one, unless you choose to. I confess I haven't driven the R-tronic box, but never really wanted to. Other reports have said the R-T box is great on the track, less so on the highway. I leave the auto box in the family car and enjoy that V10 howl whenever possible.

yeah, there are no daytona ones, for example. why is that i wonder? don't they look good in daytona? i think there is just one V8, but that's it!

also, when I think about the spec I want, which must be R8 V10, manual, daytona, under 10k miles, ceramic brakes, bucket seats, carbon trim, carbon engine surround, carbon side panels, there is just no chance I'll ever find a used one.

the only sulution is to get new, but at the mo I can't afford one and sworn to myself I'll never buy new anyway, esp that will be keeping the B7 also

There was a daytona in that spec for sale about 8 months ago bar the bucket seats hitch are just as rare as ceramics. It was up at Audi Glasgow for £84k which wasn't at all bad really!

It is truly difficult I find one with everything you want, just consider what can and can't be retrofitted.

There is a lovely looking sepang v10 on pistonheads with exclusive interior and buckets that looks great value at £72k.

I've got a black manual V10 with ceramics. The gearbox is sweet and precise.
