I had my tensioners replaced when the engine was out having valves cleaned at 44k.

Just a precaution but only a couple of hundred quid and peace of mind.

I'd agree - if you've got the engine out for what ever reason then this is the kind of preventative stuff you might as well do.
It's like the one way valve under the intake manifold - silly not to replace if you have that off for any reason.

You're putting words in my "mouth" - I said mine rattles less, in fact it's so much less that IF there is any chain rattle it's inaudible above the other normal engine noises.

I think you have made your mind up that there IS chain rattle and are looking for "evidence" to support your assumption. Evidence that I am not going to give you because I have no such evidence.

I've had a good listen to mine and you can't hear the chain at all. Granted, might be as Dave says covered up by the other noises especially the "supercharger-but-obviously-not-cause-it-aint-there" whine.

I wonder what the cause is of this (brilliantly described) whine?

I'd like to know as well! I've had mates ask me what the whine was and all I could make up was "er, yeah, that's the, um, drive train"

Isn't the whine just a characteristic of chains? what I assumed tbh.

Just out of interest (appreciate this thread is now a few years old) but I've just had a quite of circa £1500 for timing chain / guides replacement - that's with the engine already out.

I'm not sure if I can justify it - even on a high mileage car I want to keep.

If you are keeping the car it is going to have to get done at some point. £1500 is cheaper than a new engine.

I will be doing mine in a year or so it takes to cover the extra 25,000 miles.

Cheaper than some of the other work these cars need doing on a yearly basis!

But where does this idea come from? Audi say the chain and tensioners are fit for the life of the vehicle. Has there been reported cases of failure? (In the rs4 not the s4).

Also I got the sums wrong on the quote.

Timing chain and associated parts (tensioners etc) price was circa £2100 - not including the £2k to take the engine out and replace. It's a vast amount of money

I've got a pretty good relationship with the service manager at my dealer and he worked it so he just charged me for the parts. The engine was out and in bits at the time though
