Do they all do this or is it something wrong?

Post by EddyPee » Fri May 25, 2012 12:44 pm

My 07 RS4 seems to have developed a kind of metal on metal rattling on the front drives side. Lasts a couple of seconds maybe and then goes as you go thru the gears but its a random tinny rattle, (like a small stone in a can ) thats quite noticeable at low speeds, especially in 1st and 2nd at low speed, say sub 10mph but only on the drivers side.

It might have always been there but im noticing it now as its hotter so tend to drive more with the windows down.

Doesnt occur over bumps specifically. Doesnt appear to happen specifically when changing gears or braking but its really only at low low speed, parking, pulling away etc. I cant see anything hanging off or floating about.

Any ideas, suggestions or anyone had this and know what this is?

Cheers all

Ha ha, I suspect somethings not quite right, you'd notice it I think if you went anywhere with windows down. It doesnt affect driving as far as I can tell but is begginging to grate on me a bit! Just wondered if any experts have any ideas.

There was a huge thread on this about 18 months ago.

Think it was either a door handle issue, or speaker, or dash problem in the end.

Hmm, I'll have to have a look, its definately towards the front, as opposed to being close to me when driving, I thought something was loose or hanging down and tapping.

Does it occur only when under heavy acceleration between about 3-4K revs?

No, this is very low speed, 1st and 2nd gear, 5-10 mph and low revs. Never heard it above about 20mph

I am sure I have the same thing and as mentioned with the window open you won't hear anything. Mine also comes and goes and the fact that I can't pinpoint it is freaking driving me nuts!! Some days it's not there or I just don't hear it due to radio being to loud.

Check the door handle isn't loose as Timster suggests - this is a known problem on the B6/B7.

Mine did this last year, went away after i moved the airbox and airbox intake (in the wheel arch). Last week i noticed it again.

What did you find / know?

It's definately not door handle, they are fine, its definately something rattling, underneath or around the drive side wheel, it's a light tinny rattle, not a heavy clunky rattle, i cant see anything hanging or snapped but It's really really annoying so gonna get it booked in for a look before I go mad

i have always has a tinkly/rattly sound from the engine area from 10-30 mph in either 1/2/3rd gear at a light throttle around 2000-2500 rpm when car is approaching warm (but goes away when full temp). no audi garage has ever been able to diagnose it - one said another rs4 they had in at same time and used for comparison had same "characteristic". i dont worry about it. seems to come and go up to 3 months at a time. very strange one!

Ditto on that, not the door handle on mine either. Will appreciate some feedback after getting it back from the dealer.

worth checking the undertray - sometimes the clips come off and it can bang.
