boot lid is full of water!

Post by Rigsby1208 » Tue May 15, 2012 12:08 pm

Hi
Just opened my boot (yes I have a saloon!) first time in about a month. Heard this sloshing sound and when it was up water started running out of it!.
Is this a common fault? I presume water is getting in around the light cluster? Car is under warranty and is going in on Monday, my concern is that water has been leaking in for a while, and there is quite a lot in there, will it be rusting up the inside and also will it affect the lights/cause them premature failure after my warranty has expired? Should I insist they change the wiring light units or even a new boot lid?? I dont want it rusting through in a years time as this car is a keeper for me!

I had this on my last 57 reg RS4, you're right it does come from the rear light cluster, get it emptied, new seals fitted and the light cluster

tightened up.

I know what you mean about future rust, but try getting Audi to replace something that looks and works perfectly OK :thumbsdown:

It wasn't the light cluster that was letting in water on mine, see here;

In the words of Victor Meldrew...I cant believe it!
I took the car into my local Audi Dealership regarding the bootlid filling with water. Just got a call saying the light seals have gone, and that its not covered under warranty, but as a gesture of good will they will pay half! I nearly freaked I only had the car for 4 months bought from an Audi dealer!
Any thoughts?

Ask your dealer for the contact details of Alison Jones Head of UK Operations.

Hmm, not so sure about running off to Audi UK - you can probably handle this on your own. I have no personal experience with this particular fault, but until someone else points us in a slighly more informed direction here's my 2 pennies:

Find out about the recall - (a) if there was one; and (b) if it was carried out on your car. If there was indeed a recall (probably a 'do at next service' instruction) and your car wasn't done then they'll look silly - the dealer should've prepped the car better for sale. If the car was indeed done under a recall, I'd still feel in a strong position over this as it probably was leaky at the time of sale (4 months ago). so again should've prepped it better. I'm assuming it takes a while for all that water to accumulate?

I think you'd be in a strong position to sort it out with the dealer. Remember, they want your custom over the next few years. They're not dicks, honest! Or, assume they're not until proved otherwise.

I remember there being a Service Bulletin about water leaking in the spare wheel well.
