Tyre choices ??? what, who, where

well its coming up to that time of year again when a new set are req, i have been running mich;s from new 07 RS4 avant, i tend to get around 8-10k from a set, have no issues with the rubber as it seems grippy and when it does start to slide its progressive, sidewalls seem to have a fair bit of deflection on initial turn in but i'm used to that by now, we weather they also seem fine.

but sometimes the draw of the grass on the other side is strong, maybe i should be giving another brand a whirl, so what's the available choices ? how many miles from a set ? and what problems/good points have you guys seen from the other options ?

Went for the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's at the end of last year and am really, really happy with them. I had P-Zero's before and the ride is a world away from those, particularly on bad roads. The road is a lot grippier and compliant. The car soaks up bumps a lot more than it used to and sticks to the road like glue. I paid around £1K for all four fitted but I think you can get them cheaper still.

i have run the P zero's on another car and tbh didnt get on with them very well, had the handeling on them been superb i could have excused the wear rate,
i will have a look around for goodyear eagle pricing see what the best is,

anyone able to rate the vreds or others ?

My RS4 came on PZero Rossos which wore out in 9k miles and were really twitchy in the wet - they're never going near my RS4 again.

My preferences:
PS2s - if cost is no object, but they do last well so the cost per mile is good
F1 Asymmetrics - if rim protection is a priority
Sessantas - if budgets are tighter

I've had P Zero's on for 10k miles and they're currently down to 4mm so will be changing them soon. I've had no issues with them at all and have really enjoyed the car, then again I came from a BMW M5 which had no grip unless it was bone dry so maybe another brand might make a fantastic car even better?

VReds's are highly rated and not expensive from camskill

They're only half worn! You've got 1000's miles left in them unless they are that shi*e you need rid!

I went for Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's... I can highly recommend them. I paid 850 quid fitted. That should be about your target price.
Any cheaper and you'll have a real bargain but expect to pay maybe 900 but no more. Do some shopping about, there are good deals out there and getting them delivered to your door and then fitted by a local tyre fitter for 50 quid can work out much cheaper than going to a tyre shop.

How do people find the Pilot Super Sports??? I'm in the same boat and will need a set soon. I've whittled it down to the PSS or the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's... , cant ignore the F1's as sooo many people rave about them and they get good write-ups. I've had michelin pilot sports on my old supra (400hp through the rears) for years and they always perform and wear really well.

any thoughts between the super sports and the F1's????

Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric 275.30.19 I have hand 2 sets now and they are the nuts, you can't go wrong with them, just dropped my mate back from the pub he was scared silly by the handling, Nuff said

I had a set of Conti Sport Contact 3's which were new when I got the RS4, and they did 13k, before I replaced them. They weren't worn out, but they were noisy. I replaced them Michelin PS2's late last year, which are excellent, quiet, with good grip (although I don't 'hammer' the car...). Cost me £1020 fitted. Worth every penny.
Incidentally, Audi recommend RO1 tyres for the RS4, but Goodyear FI Assy's don't do them. I understand they do the AO (Audi Only) tyre, but apparantly the RO1 fitment is recommended for the RS4 due to the profile of the sidewall, to prevent fouling of the wheelarches? Only Michelin, Continetal and Pirelli do the RO1; that is why the majority of RS4's had these tyres as original fitment.
I have used Goodyear F1 Assy 2's though on my daily workhorse, and can throughly recommend them....

I don't think there should be any issues with tyre rub on the arches, as I have kw coil overs, it sits low with no trouble with tyre scrub with the 275.30 .19 I've bn running the car like this for 4 years with no probs at all

I agree entirely. I think Goodyear F1's look right and are excellent tyres. As most RS4's are now 5+ years old, I would doubt many will have RO1 tyres fitted now. An Audi tyre fitter once told me that Audi were supposed to fit RO1 tyres to 'Approved' used cars, but I think even that has now fallen by the wayside, as I have seen all sorts of different makes on RS4's on Audi forecourts..... even budgets. I guess it lowers the overheads on used cars

How do people find the Pilot Super Sports???

I have them fitted to my Subaru and think they are excellent although I have not really tried them in the wet.
I fitted them for my trip to the Ring and after a total of around 1700 miles including 13 laps of the Ring I have 6mm left on the fronts and 7mm left on the rears.

I will deff be buying them again

On my 2nd set of Vred's and they're bloody good for the money, particularly in the wet.

May give the Goodyears a try next time though.

I've ordered the Michelin PSS tires. They are very highly rated and should out performe other similar tires. I've used Michelin PS2 and PS3 previously and these were very good.

My RS came with the Vred's on and I have to say I'm pretty impressed with them! I've just bought a full set of them for the Alpina that I'm selling going on how they've been, cracking tyre for the coin.
