Has anyone 'upgraded' to the 2010+ RNSe?

Post by sakimano » Wed Feb 29, 2012 9:38 pm

I did this on the weekend. I had RNSe in my B7 S4 but my RS4 was one of the rare ones that did not have it from the factory...so I took this as an opportunity to get the updated LED screen 2010+ version that is used in the A3. Many people on ebay etc. are selling these A3 units with OEM 8E A4 (S4/RS4) faceplates for perfect fitment.

Install was a breeze thanks to various DIYs on the forums

screen is upgraded quite a bit resolution wise, but since the graphics are simple text and basic maps, this is not a big deal

it's a little better organized...there's a MEDIA button which you click to access your CD list/iPod playlists, 2xSDHC cards and your AUX input if you have one. All on one screen which is nice. RNSe 2005.5 required you to bounce around a couple of menus for this.

sound seems the same

SD card slots - this is the biggest improvement in my mind. The old one can take up to 4GB SD cards (if you can find them) but the new one has improved card reading hardware that will allow SDHC cards...thus you can have 2 x 32 GB SDHC cards for a massive quantity of your favourite music. I have just about everything I want on one 32 GB card...and I'll use the other slot for things I update i.e. top 40 charts that change etc. Not sure yet...I may actually just leave that job to my iPod and the playlists although I don't like not being able to see iPod song names.

traffic updates - North American cars didn't have this on the original RS4 RNSe so it's nice to have it on this upgraded unit. This is old hat for EU folks though

Overall its a nice thing to have in the car, and being able to control your music with the folder view and the thumb wheels on the steering wheel (if you have MFSW) is fantastic, now that those folders are massive (vs. my old 4GB cards). Sure beats the wireless and/or a blind view of iPod playlists.

For whatever reason the steering wheel (MFSW) has lost 1 function in NAV...used to be that if you pressed the volume wheel on the MFSW while in the midst of navigating somewhere, the NAV lady would speak the next direction to you. It was nice in case you missed it...or wanted to plan for it...or if you wanted to adjust her volume (once she was speaking, you could adjust the volume of her commands with the volume wheel while she spoke). I was wondering if anyone else put the new unit in an RS4 and noticed that this does not work anymore?

A few screen shots...although these had the screen protector still on as I was still installing it.

As I've posted on here before I bought my RNS-E with a Symphony II as I could retrofit an RNS-E for less than Audi charged for the option (and get an SDS version which wasn't even an option) and have the Symphony II to sell on.

That was in 2006, and in 2010 I swapped the RNS-E for a 2010+ version (again with SDS). The SDHC cards alone make it worth the upgrade IMHO as I've now got 64GB of music instantly accessible on 2 x 32GB SDHC cards. I've seen talk over the last few days that AMI might work on the B7 so when I get back home I'll be trying the CAN AMI that's sitting in my study.

WOAH!! That looks superb.

I had an A5 black edition as a loan car the other week and I think this had a similar unit, made my existing RNS-E look very outdated.

Did you pay ~£1,000 for it? Is is a straight swap with the same connections?

Did you look at the Kenwood double din sized units?

I have the Alpine KCE-425i and Kufatec IMA plus just to run my iPod and that's not brilliant, I'd love to take the lot out and swap for something like this, especially as my iPod is about to die!!!

I've actually seen these "A3 RNSE 2010 LED" units on eBay for £499 on a buy-it-now, if that's right I'm having one, I'd get that back for the old RNSE with Kufatec, Alpine, reverse camera etc...

As there is NO 2010+ RNS-E made for the A4 you nee to buy an A3 or TT 2010+ RNS-E and swap the faceplate from your current RNS-E to make a "hybrid" that has the 2010+ electronics but a pre-2010 faceplate.

So I can't give you an Audi part number as there isn't one!

Once you've done that it's a straight swap, with the usual need to correct the coding and clear fault codes (especially if you have Bluetooth) using VCDS (VAG-COM).

So i guess it will not come up with the rs4 bit at the beginning or can that be reprogrammed in would you think ?

Looking on eBay for the units they vary in price by a LOT

£1,349
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-TT-RNSE- ... _521wt_905

Looks exactly the same as this one for £449
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300662611288? ... 131wt_1270

Why such a difference, are there differences in those units? Says they both take SD cards and as they're the latest units they will be SDHC cards?

A lot seem to come from Lithuania :biggrin2:

Some are also refurb units.

I dont think I could live with the gloss black surround, for that kind of money I'd want it perfect. My initial view was a straight swap and sell the existing RNS-E unit but that isn't the case, a "donor" unit is required for the surround to fit the dash which would render the perfectly good existing one pretty much useless.

After a bit of diggin round on the internet it would SEEM that the Seat RNS-E unit is EXACTLY the same, but I will leave it to someone else to try before I spend over £500 on it ;)

There are people that can get hold of a replacement surround, leaving you to sell your older RNS-E used but intact.
No matter where you go, there you are.
