Gearbox Oil change

Post by Dave7 » Mon Jan 02, 2012 1:55 pm

Happy New Year to you all...

I've read on some other sites that people have used an Oil called Redline MTL Or Redline MT90 so I am wondering if anyone can recommend these?when very cold - sub 0 temps / city driving from cold where the gearbox Oil doesn't have time to heat up, changing to 2nd from 1st isn't easy

Cheers
Dave

I personally would not use anything but the Audi stuff
alot is going on in this gearbox: tranny, diff, xfer gearset

spec is 75W90, GL4+ (NOT GL5), fully synthetic, rated for hypoid gears, Motul and LubroMoly make it, and obviously Audi does too
imo the MTL is too thin, the MT90 too thick when cold

I changed mine with Lubro, but it was GL5, so I replaced it within a few k miles with oem, it just didn't sound right

I've used mt90 in other cars and nothing but praise but agree with Arthur wrt to the Quattro.
There's just too much involved to start messing with the oil without studying the oil in detail.

Out of interest and this may sound silly but how are you changing from 2nd to 1st?

Normal behaviour of any high torque capacity gearbox.

The GT-R, when cold and at low speeds, changes like a bag of spanners.

Best way to fall out with a GT-R owner is to mention gearbox oil.... It's Nissan special brew and needs to be changed if it goes over a certain temp. Costs the equivalent per liter to Santa semen.

That's the thing with a gtr - it's a 150k car with 150k car running and maint costs that happens to be sold for 60k.

Makes the rs4 look cheap to run! Which is is until it goes seriously wrong!
600 quid insurance, 22mpg, 4 tyres for 850, 336 quid for a longlife service... It's actually not that bad!

Just checked and like for like my insurance triples with the gtr. Throw in what I believe to be 2.5k for tyres from a dealer and 4k for brakes it does get rather expensive. mind you the 2012 car is 80k so a fair bit up on the 55k launch price.

As for 2nd to 1st cold changes Ive found a little lift on the clutch so it's tiny tiny engaged is enough to coax it in.
Course the best way is to heel n toe just before the car stops.

My insurance is cheaper for the GT-R than the C5 RS6 and includes track day cover. Tyres were £1300. There are cheaper aftermarket brake options too.

And 11k if you have a slow speed frontal bump which fires the pyrotechnic bonnet hinges...(which lift the bonnet so any pedestrian you may have hit won't dent the bonnet far enough to hit their head on the top of the engine).

yeah - I think the final bill was reduced but still the best part of 7k.
I mean, the initial quote included replacement of the 2 ECUs that control the pyro charges - WTF?
