Hi, the yellow brake warning light in the DIS has just come on. I guess i will need new pads fitted, how long do i have until they ruin my discs ? Any recommendations of which pads to go for ? Is this a dealer job or can i have them changed with any garage ? I am in Essex, SOuthend if anybody has any recommendations. I usually have everything done with MRC as they are fantastic, but its a long way for me

When my light came on, the dealer told me the pads were 60% worn. I ignored for a while and the light went off and now they are 70% worn and the light is still off.

What sort of mileage did you have when your warning light came on ? I have done 24000, is that the normal mileage you would expect ?

if you have the old style pads, and the light came on, chances are your rotors are scored
look at them, see if you see 3 concentric rings ground into them....

check them visually, if you begin to see scoring, change pads (better yet, change them every 20k or so to prevent scoring) if the light comes on it may be too late

my rotors have 50k miles and pads at 20k and 35k and still look good (when mic'ed 50% worn)

Dont let them get this bad lol

Just had a friend of mime look at the discs, and he thinks they do not look to good. They are very shiny, mirrorlike and have quite a bit of a lip on the edge. I have only driven 50 miles since the warning light has come on, and the car has only had 24000 miles. Anyway, in case i do need new front discs, has anybody got suggestions of where to buy them, also what brakepads do i get ? I have a mechanic coming this week to look at the discs, and he will fit pads and discs if necessary, but i have to supply the parts.

I have the discs and pads available.

I will give you a call when i know if i need the discs as well as pads, and not sure yet which pads i should go for, i do not track the car but drive it hard on the road...

I got the pagid ones from Philip. They are very much like the oem. Way cheaper than dealers. Only issue I hav is an occasional squeek on braking sometimes, but not irritating or frequent. When my pads need replacing again , I wil get the same ones from Philip again. Very cost effective....and they come with sensors and don't have the pins!

24,000 miles sounds well low for your front discs to be worn out. 40,000 is about the norm for front discs on a B7. Contact Dave at MRC they have a mobile disc brake specialist they call in to solve scored or lipped discs. He remachines the discs whilst they are on the vehicle maximising there life and aligning the discs perfectly to the axle. I watched him last time I took my car there. I sure he is based in East Anglia.

I think i found the company, they are calles disc skimmers ltd, they have a reference to MRC on their website, have emailed them. Stll not sure what pads to go for...

They are the same.....i changed mine last week..the OEM Audi were made by pagid!!! the only difference was the ones i got from Phil didnt have four rings stamped onto them....

I did go for the Pagis pads from Philip in the end, and had my discs skimmed. He did a great job, and including the pads i spent less than half of what new discs alone would have cost ! And the car feels really good again...

This makes me want to get my spare discs skimmed.

If you have been supplied Pagid T1222 pads, they might fit but they definitely aren't the same as the genuine pads.

I had the two side by side (genuine and these) and the contact area on the non-genuine pads is smaller, I also suspect the compound is different, it looks it. I fitted the genuine set to my car even though they cost 3 times more as I didn't want to mess with something that quattro GmbH spent a lot of time an money tweaking.

Look at is this way, the bonnet on an RS4 looks like that on a TDI but it's made of aluminium not the steel of the TDI, appears to be the same but it's not.

Having said that, the Pagid T1222 is good value and we have fitted numerous sets having explained the difference to buyers with no issues. For the record my genuine pads also squealed at first !
