Advice needed for road trip

Post by drbru » Fri Feb 18, 2011 4:55 pm

Ok, so heading across to the Alps for a week of downhill biking in July

The avant will have 3 bikes on the roof with the inside of the car fully packed with kit and 3 biggish blokes...

It will be a tight fit but it will work

The issue that I have been reminded of after reading a recently submitted post is with regards to the spare wheel or lack of it!..

we have £60,000 pound cars which came with no spare wheel but a rather useless puncture repair kit

So in this situation, what the hell do I do?...I am nervous to do a trip of this length with no spare wheel and im not sure I have the space inside to take a spare tyre....Any ideas from peoples experience?

IIRC there was a thread where Necakrsulm listed parts and prices for a spcae saver wheel that could be used on the RS4, will be less space that a full size which is what I took with me last time to Europe.

Make sure you have full European breakdown cover, and check your insuance policy to see if it covers tyres. If your insurance is with Aviva like mine, you may not be covered.

In future I am definitely going to squeeze a spare tyre in somewhere, even if it means sacrificing something else.
It takes it a lot of space yes, but as it's mostly hollow you should be able to pack a lot of stuff inside it.

Can someone answer me this question if your car has a space saver wheel when you have a puncture where do you put the full size wheel? Porsche have space savers but where do you put a huge rear wheel chuck your pasenger out and tell them you will see them later.

That's a good question.

Maybe mail it to yourself in your home country?!?! It does sort of defeat the purpose of the small space saver if you have to lug the large wheel around.

There doesn't seem to be an all-encompassing solution so maybe a used tyre & gunk is the way forward?
