Squeek when on full lock....

Hey peeps how are you all??

I have notiuced a squeek coming from the steering rack on my 07 RS4 (daytona grey, fat boy seats, 19" Bridgestone RE050's all round ) when the rack is on full lock. I know cars arent supposed to be moved on full lock but sometimes i just cant get it out of the garage without going to full lock!

It never used to do this and wondered if anyone else has heard of this phenomenon?? Or had any issues with the steering rack?

Oli

Hello.

Only problem I ever had with the steering rack was that it needed tightening. Symptom was a knocking noise when on full/semi lock in reverse. Remedy, Dealer had it up on ramp, a twist of a spanner and job done. one happy RS4 owner.

Not sure of the squeaking noise, have you checked fluid? do you have front spacers and or running 275/30s? this could cause fowling on the inside arch liner. My twp pence worth. Keep us updated.

audi bolton change the power steering pump on my avant , but if i am honest it still does it sometimes might take it back and get them to look if any thing is loose, would not be good to lose a steering arm when you are driving fast ...(but within the limits of the law of course)

It's more than likely the steering belt as it's strained at full lock.

If it's under warranty still get it checked, if the belt goes its a nightmare to try and drive!

I had one go on a roundabout at the end of a motorway! Not fun!

Was that on the RS4 Mac?

Had that happen to me on track ages ago. Surprisingly not as bad as you'd think. Lot's of noise and odd sensation through the steering wheel but controllable to find somewhere safe to park it.

No, few years ago in a golf! Had to fight with it around the roundabout.

Vw told me to drive it in and they'd sort it under warranty! Obviously told them where to go!

Hi Sonny and 3rd gear,

cheers for the repilies, I shall check what spacers the car has on it once I get back from work (currently in desert workin). The car hasnt been modified at all so it should be the standard 19" set up. I am gonna pay for the Audi warrenty that I saw posted on the forum a few days ago, as I think just for piece of mind it may well be worth it. If it is somethign more serious i cnt see it being too cheap!

anyway thanks once again and I'll keep you infiormed of what the outcome is

Regards

Oli

If its not modified then it wont have spacers (but worth checking any way).

btw who's 3rd Gear? ;)

My steering squeaks on full lock too. Will probably get a dealer to look at it one day.

Check the power steering hydraulic fluid if just squeeking on full lock. £5 for a new carton of fluid and it only takes about 20-40ml to remedy the issue.

Alright lads

the car had its big service a few monhts ago and all levels are fine.

And I read Adsgreen as 3rd gear lol! thats what nightshift does for ya!

I dunno whether I dare mention it to the dealership or just take component warrenty out???

anyway cheers once again gents

Cold weather can affect the levels, even if it was serviced a few months ago. A quick 30 second check to open up the resevoir when engine is cold and look at the dipstick and top up if necessary.

Mine has a metallic squeak when reversing on full lock. Fluids are fine.
I figure it's a 'feature' and as long as it doesnt get worse I don't mind- I just don't use absolute full lock.
Interestingly though I've not noticed it since I got the steering rack bolts replaced.

Noticed that the 2012 gtr disables 4wd when under 8mph and more than 50% lock

Hi Ads,

Yeah i was thinking the same, but i dont fancy forking out for a new rack!

A pal at an Audi independant specialist said it could be the racks fluid relief vallve that is squeeking, as its only when on full lock.

hopefully it is covered under warrenty! I will let you know of any devlopments
