Front tyres different make to rear

Post by warnhammar » Sun Jan 16, 2011 1:49 pm

Hi,

I need two front tyres on my car but the rears are hardly worn due to them being replaced out of sync.

Is there a problem with fitting a different make of front tyres on the rear vs the back. Have continentals all round but was thinking of replacing with vredsteins or F1's.

Should I just stick with continentals as that is what is already on there? Do they wear well?

Cheers,

Jon

I have only had my RS4 a few weeks and when I bought it I knew it needed new tyres all round, a mix up at the garage and I had 2 rear tyres replaced, then 2 more a week later.

I therefore drove on 2 worn Pirelli's at the front and 2 brand new ones one the rear for around 2-300 miles. I have never felt so nervous in a car!!! The handling was terrible, I'm told the diff doesn't like different tyres on a Quattro so if you swap them you should do all 4 at once. I know I will in future.

If your rears are OK then I would get 4 tyres all the same fitted and get some money back by selling the 'old' ones.

Continentals are not the best anyway. Daz has a point, get all 4 done at once and opt for your preferences and then sell the Conti's here / other forums / E-Bay; you'll find a buyer for them.

Walton on Thames Audi,

They replaced the two fronts as they were low, but left the two rears as they had a load of tread left, one of which is a bridgestone.

I currently run 2 P Zeros on the back and 2 F1 on the front. I think as long as you have the same make and tread on the two axles (front and Back) then you should be fine. It is best to have all the same make but at £250 it may not always be possible

Ice, mine was the same when came from the dealers. It had Verd and Michelin on the front. Called ACS and they told me that I should have same make same axle. They handled the contact with the dealer and then they paid for two new tyres on the front. Bonus.

I woud say as long as you have the same rolling circumference, and same tread pattern it can be alright, running different tread patterns in the rain can be very dangerous, has to do how the wheels dis purse the water!

Ice, I think there's something on the Audi Approved checklist that states Quattros must be the same all round.

Ok, I just got off the phone to my dealership (service manager) and the plot thickens, It would seem that the servicing dept requested 4 tyres and sales said no! im now waiting for a call back from the sales manager to explain why he said no !

Because it would have come out of their 'margin' on the car....

I used Walton Audi some years ago when I had my S3 and lived around the corner from them - they were excellent, but when I went in to look at an RS4 last year, the tw4t of a saleman (even with some prompting) didn't even come back to me with a trade in price on my RR Sport or to arrange the test drive we had discussed......he lost a sale as a result.

I'd push hard to get 4 x new rubbers I_C.....
