Advice required on exhaust

Post by Stealth_RS4 » Wed Jul 07, 2010 10:43 pm

Bad news, was rear ended 2 weeks ago, not a major impact but cracked my bumper and damaged the exhausts. I was in sports mode at the time and afterwards I noticed the sports mode isn't working (no loud noise) and I'm down on power aswell. Going into the garage tomorrow for assessment all being paid for by the other parties insurance. Want to make sure everything is fixed properly, what items should I insist are completely replaced and not just fixed or patched up.What sort of diagnostics should be run by the garage to diagnose any problems.

If there is no noise then your actuators (bits hat operate the flaps in the exhaust) sound like they are broke. They run off the same vacuum system as in your engine so if one section is broke the ECU's will turn the wick down hence why you feel down on power as well.

Best to have the complete back boxes including tips and actuators replaced.

and check for vacuum leaks...make sure all the hoses etc are reconnected...
that is probably the reason for the lack of power

Reason why premiums are going up is because people aren't looking where they are going on the road and crashing into the back of people!! :D

The exhaust system is all one so you would have no option but to fit a complete exhaust system from cats.

You can get just back boxes and tips Terry. I have mine replaced under warranty because the exhaust valves were sqeeking badly and it wasn't a whole new system.

Cut the boxes and welded. They come as a back box / actuator / tip complete assembly but I suspect you would be cheaper to find an exhaust fabricator and get them to weld the actuator tip assembly on to one of their back boxes and attach this to the exhaust pipes or get a cat back system.

Both would probably be roughtly the same if not cheaper than buying OEM back boxes.
