HOW TO: B7 MFSW to FBSW (USA to EURO Steering Wheel)

Hi all,

My RS4 had a Multifunction wheel as standard, so of course I wanted the flat bottomed one, here is a brief fitting guide for others thinking of doing the same ;-)

1. Tools required

Image

1x Multispline socket size 3812 and extension bar / ratchet
1x Torx T30 and ratchet driver
1x right angled pick
1x Vagcom lead (can version)
1x FBSW!

2. Ok, to start you need to turn your steering wheel so that the volume control is facing 12 o'clock, if you then look at the top of the steering wheel you will see a small plastic cover, this needs to be removed to access the torx screws that hold the airbag in place. Remove the covers as shown in the picture below using the pick and then use the T30 torx to slacken off the captive nut inside. Next turn the steering wheel through 180 degrees and repeat.

Now CAREFULLY keeping hold of the AIRBAG turn the steering wheel so it is in a straight ahead position and REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION, next we need to remove the airbag from the car, using the pick tool slowly pull the airbag away from the wheel from the top first until you can see the yellow connector shown in picture 1, this yellow connector needs to be disconnected so that you can remove the AIRBAG, you do this by inserting the pick tool down into the purple connector and then you need to pull the purple latch towards you, the yellow connector will then come away from the steering wheel, you can now fully remove the AIRBAG but ensure you put the AIRBAG somewhere safe and FACE UP.

Next we need to remove the wheel by removing the nut in the centre of the steering wheel using your splinedrive socket MAKE NOTE OF THE POSITION OF THE WHEEL before you remove it so you can position your new wheel straight first time! Then simply pull you old wheel off, this should require little effort!

Image

Ok, now put your new wheel in place and position it correctly with the marks from your old wheel, insert the splinedrive nut and tighten it up!

Next take your new AIRBAG and insert the yellow connector into the steering wheel, once this has been done you can put your key in the ignition to turn the wheel and screw in the AIRBAG retaining bolts and fit the bolt covers.

(If you don't have to loom to go from the airbag to the wheel you can use the old one from your MFSW)

That's the wheel fitted, the buttons will light up but they won’t work. To activate the steering wheel buttons you need to use your VAGCOM lead, connect the lead to your laptop and car then follow the instructions below:

1. Press "Select"
Image

2. Press "16-Steering Wheel"
Image

3. Press "Coding-07"
Image

4. This is the good bit - changing the coding - very simple - First note the original code and keep it safe (mine was 04441 for a saloon with nav and cruise) then change the 2nd, 3rd and 4th numbers of the software code to "602" and press Do it, that’s it job done, the S button will now work on your wheel but the dash mounted button will cease to function as will the button for the DIS on the stalk. Log out of VAGCOM.

Sorry it's a bit sketchy for me but it's late and we have a newborn in the house ;-)

Please feel free to ask for help with any part including coding / vagcom ETC ;-)

You could also also the dash mounted sport button if you were to invest in telephone SDS to activate that function.

Good post. Looks great, as above, use the dash mounted 'S' button for the SDS function for the voice recognition (if yours did not have this already you can have it added as a aftermarket mod).
