Going to be putting a deposit on a S4 in the new year, by the time i have added all of my bits and bobs I'm in the region of £42k...lot of loot for a S4.
Now my dilemma is this, buy a new car or save about 6/7k and get an RS4. My only issue with the RS is its age, for a few grand more i get a new car but not as much fun....

I'm just trying to weigh up all the pros and cons...

definitely get rs4 purely for these reasons.
1. cheaper
2. better
3. more fun
4. looks better
5. it has already lost a lot of its money so you will lose so much less on depreciation

the only negative is it might cost you a little bit more on maintenance and insurance and that wont be much. deffo rs4 mate.

And save up for a B9 RS4 (if they make one)

Really good post as I can imagine this being a true dilema for you bud For what its worth both cars are superb but I am led to believe you will see a steeper and faster depreciation on a new S4 than a second hand RS. Clearly the benefit of choosing spec and having an unmolested car from scratch is appealing. If it was me and it was some 2 years ago with another car to be honest I would look at a RS with a high spec and some warrantly left on it, low miles etc. There are some excellent deals to be had out there but as you have said 42k on a new S4 that will drop massivily as soon as you start it up is painful. 35k would get you a near perfect RS with all the trim you could ever need and to be honest most of the new niggles such as DRC either covered or sorted. A recent sale on here of Pippyrips car is a prime example of what quality you can pick up at a good price. Its an older car yes, fair point but I would argue ageless in its presence. If you buy an S4 you will always think what if ! and then one will fly past you ! Good luck mate loads of useful tips coming your way Im sure.

this requires a spreadsheet i believe to get a useful financial number as a number of variables to consider (i.e. the cost of Audi extended warranty for 3 years at £1.2k pa)

but in pure non-financial terms, get the RS 4 all day long (and I dont even own one!)

Have driven both hence the post. If i did not like the drive of the RS i wouldn't be in the dilemma of a new car verses a 3 year old car .This is why i would lean towards the S4 as the RS is looking a little dated..but the drive is fantastic, the S4 is just not as raw.

Defo RS4, I have had mine since May and still smile every time I push the start button. The S4 is a very good car as well and I think either way you will be happy but the fact is that the B7 RS4 is already a legend and I don't think they are ageing yet. There are still very few cars that can compete with the RS even now when it is 3 years down the line.

And the new s4 just looks too much like an audi a4 deisel- with big wheels.
Sunroof on s4 is nice though...

Ditto, only thing going for it is the front end, nice lights lol

get the car that you will enjoy more.. I've always found audi S cars to be a bit soft for my liking, the RS models however have that extra raw/sporty edge to them. They are both based on the A4 platform so are practical and comfortable. Thats a lot of money for an S4, ok so its new and has 3yrs warranty and is more efficient but is it as much fun? I think probably not from what your saying. Get a milltek on the RS4 and it will be even better!
