Dragging feel / vibration under full lock

Post by leechaos_666 » Sat Nov 21, 2009 7:56 pm

Hi guys I am getting a dragging feel when on full lock, just wondered if anyone else was getting a similar thing? It has just had a big check over by audi so i ASSUME the drc is fine. tyres are brand new as well and they are the 255/ 35 19. Im just a bit worried. thanks guys

Nothing wrong there. A lot of big cars have a similar system. When on full lock the wheels sort of tilt sligtly to reduce the turning circle. This causes a very slight 'dragging' of the tyres but given the very slow speed (presumably given you're on full lock) it won't harm the tyres.

Yes, it's do do with the fact that the slight difference required between the angle of the inside tyres and outside tyres at a given steering position (Ackermann angle) is never exactly optimised and so there's a little 'drag'. Worst is at fullest lock.

Also remember we have 4WD which adds a little more 'drag' by the fact that the differential action is a little imperfect at full lock.

So, aside all that rather dull detail, it's fine...

Is made worse when wider profile tyres are fitted. I've 275 & this became more noticable than with the stock 255. Also made worse when cold/wet.

Wait till the cold weather comes.......cold tyres when starting off in the morning feels like you are driving on the rims!!! I was quite concerned the first time....jumped out the car thinking my tyres had been slashed!!
