How many of you have driven the Saloon AND the Avant ?

Post by victor2vt » Fri Sep 04, 2009 5:40 pm

I own a Saloon but have never driven an Avant.

Are they that different a drive ?

I, personally prefer the looks of the Saloon and didn't need the extra space of the Avant, that's why i bought it.

What made up your mind ?
Mint Optic Pack saloon in Daytona Grey (Now sold)
B7 RS4 in Sprint Blue (Gone to a very good new home)
Evo V1 (wish i'd kept)
Numerous M3s

The Saloon looked more sporty imho, I have driven a Avant but not an RS4. I do like the look of the avant, and went through "a phase" thinking that I wish I had bought one.
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

I only got to test drive two saloons and then bought an Avant. It may be psychological but the extra weight over the rear end does make it feel slightly more planted, especially on heavy braking and turn in wher I felt the rear end went a fair bit lighter in the saloon.

Driven both - you can tell that the Avant has a little more weight over the rear wheels; I felt that the saloon was very slightly more nimble. Rear headroom is better in the Avant (and the Avant is more practical if you need the storage space).

I test drove a saloon before I ordered my Avant.

I need the extra practicality (= load capacity for things like ovens and dishwashers) of an Avant so the saloon was never an option that I considered seriously.

Can't say I notice much difference in the handling, but both are significantly better to drive than my previous S4s!

I have a saloon and had 2 Avants on hire while mine was in for bodywork (owned 2 Avant diesels before this). The main noticeable difference was that mine has SS+ and the Avants didn't so it was hard to make a handling comparison. Avant was definitely more practical and I've always thought the car was designed as an estate and the saloon came after (I know it didn't but do you know of a better looking estate car?)

If I could have found an Avant with the spec I have I would have bought that instead but more that happy with the saloon

p.s. I don’t have kids/dogs/mother in-laws to consider so the saloon is fine for me!!

Avant

I have test driven 4 saloons and 2 avants over the last week and the avant by a mile. so have bought 07 plate avant in Avus silver. its ride handling everything was so much better. Only thing that dissapointed me was the lack of quality of the cars from the dealers. some with only 35000miles on 06 plates and 4 owners, tatty interiors, mines a one owner from new, mint condition, pick it up week on thurs. :D goodbye to the S4 cab.
