Brake disc scoring and pad wear

Post by Markeemark » Sun Jul 26, 2009 11:58 am

Hi

I recently took my RS in for some warranty work on the suspension and I was told that my pads are 70% worn and my discs are scored. They stated that the pads would be OK until the next service (4-5k miles away). When I mentioned about the problems with pins on the pads scoring the discs they stated that the scoring was caused by a stone or similar.

Having read the post regarding pins causing disc scoring prior to the warning light coming on, have Audi got a case to answer because I am sure that the scoring on the disc is consistent on both which would indicate to me possible damage caused by these wear indicator pins.

I have no brake squealing or judder indicating worn discs. The car is a Jan 07 24k.

Views or advice please before I contact Audit Customer Services

PS The dealership have stated that I don't require new discs

My understanding is that the latest OEM pads have been upgraded to resolve this problem - is this now the case? The part number ending in Q.

Also any advice on remaining with OEM pads with a view to any future warranty claims.

Thanks for your help.

Utter b%llo*cks i changed my front discs and pads due to this, discs would of done another set of pads if it hadnt been for the scoring from the pads.No warning lights on nothing just the pads/pins merrily destroying £500 discs, my car has 27k on the clock,im debating having the old ones skimmed but it will put them close to the 32mm limit, they have modded oe pads now but dont want to know about customers cars that have had expensive discs eaten by origonal set

my old pads were scoring the discs even though the stealer said they had 50% wear left, i got they them to replace them FoC with the arguement being if i waited till the warning lights came on the discs would be ruined....

If you have three concentric rings on your discs, which line up with the location of the pins, I'd suggest to Audi that they might like to consider their position again as the chances of 3 stones getting stuck in the exact same location as the pins must be statistically remote.

About as remote as finding a good Audi dealer.

Stick with Camberley Audi.

As for changing pads from OEM, not only might you invalidate your warranty but your insurance too...somethings just aren't worth pi**ing about with until you're out of warranty...

IMHO.

so has anybody got any pics of where the pins stick out of the pads, to work out where they would be damaging the discs, as this issue seems to come up quite a bit

Good picture here

A bunch of folks in the US including me have those Centric Posi pads to replace the stock ones. Way way less dust, no noise, braking is fine.
