Watching a few vids on you tube.. really like the look of the US style bootlid(saloon) with the smaller number plate recess..Anyone know if you can purchase one in this country??

Not really sure why you would want to get one. UK plates won't fit legally unless you fit a huge land rover style one which I think would look funny! And you would also have the cost of spraying etc. Only to then have a problem when sale time comes because people will struggle to understand why you changed it. Just IMO but if I'm honest I can think of a million other mods that would improve your car

That's the real issue - UK number plates have legally to be a certain size and to use certain fonts and have certain spacings between the characters. All that means they won't fit into the smaller recess on the US style boot.

not 100% sure but the jap import cars have the smaller type reg on them and as far as i know there is no requirement to make mods to fit standard uk size so may be you could get away with it.

Even imports have to fit UK spec number plates - which is why the plates don't fit the recesses on them.

The regs were made even tighter when the new style XX 51 XXX plates were introduced.

Pretty sure there is still a provision for imported cars to have slightly smaller plates with correspondingly smaller font, but only if it is not possible to fit a UK sized plate, and this applies to impoted cars, not imported boot lids! Have to agree with Jim anyway, huge hassle and expense and just not worth it.

I'd just do it. Look at the VW scene, so many people are doing it with no problems. I don't know what all the fuss is about with minor legalities!

Best way is to contact an owner over there through a forum who wants a UK spec one and then arrange a swap...

I wouldn't look for a swap, you might not have to pay for the lid but you'd have two lots of shipping costs. I'd keep the uk lid wrapped up somewhere so that it can be swapped back when the time comes to sell the car, can't see the average careful buyer being too keen to look at a car which doesn't seem to have a UK spec. The other thing is if you use a smaller plate and smaller font then it will look like an import from behind - not a good thing surely?

His local plod weren't impressed!

If you do something that is visible and "illegal" on your car, then you should expect to get stopped sooner or later and, if you're lucky get 14 days to fix it or if you're unlucky get a fine.

That's especially true of number plates because if it stops their ANPR systems (for speed measurement and road tax enforcement) working then they won't take a lenient view.

That was me as well. Stopped once and nicely told to put it back on. Now have a smaller plate at the front, relocated. I can take that off as and when I like...

I always prefer a smoother look at the front and have never really had much bother from the police. Where I park my car at work, the local police, who drive in and out all day, can see it and have never stopped me or made enquiries.

I think it depends where you live. If you have a load of youngsters in corsas etc. then they may be more firm, but that doesn't seem to be the case where I am...
